NEW BUSINESS - Curriculum:
Presenter
John Floyd, Advisory Chair
Minutes
Current Curriculum: Members took a moment to review the current degree, certificate and course descriptions. Lance Myers asked for the flow of the courses to be explained and what students learn. Mike Stevens went through each course description and informed members of the assignments, projects and objectives students were learning in the 2D Animation program. John Floyd commented that he especially liked that we are teaching a Stop Motion class as it teaches students posing and breakdown that could not only be used in 2D but in building 3D models as well. Joe Rothenberg asked if all courses were required and if we had any advanced optional courses. Mike Stevens answered all courses are required and that we would be discussing advanced optional courses at the meeting.
Jimmy Tovar asked members what they were looking for in demo reels from applicants that our students could include in the portfolios. Comments from members:
• Some still use charts, but most do not, however it still good for students to learn timing and
especially if the project is going to be handed off to another animator.
• Timing, particle systems, hand drawn effects, character design, traditional animation, generalist in
animation and cel, animatic
• Students should tailor each reel to the job they are applying
Proposed Curriculum Modifications:
Associate of Applied Science & Level 2 Certificate:
Mike Stevens presented a draft of a proposed AAS and Level 2 certificate for members review and comments. After a lengthy discussion of what courses and skills were eliminated from the degree when it went to from 72 to 60 hours, members suggested we bring back Storyboard, Digital Painting and Portfolio. They also inquired about the lecture/lab component of some of the courses and feel more hands-on lab time needs to be included in certain classes to give the students repetitive practice for skill building and more time to complete big final projects.
Enhanced Skills Certificate in 2D Animation:
In part of the discussion above with regards to courses within the AAS, members asked if it was possible for students to continue their education with very advanced courses above the AAS if students wanted to specialize. They were informed of the Enhanced Skills Certificate. Members proposed the following courses (or types of courses) in an Enhanced Skills Certificate:
Stop Motion II – Studio based course where students work together to build an advanced stop motion project and explore advanced techniques.
Character Design II – Advanced character development, Animal & Creature Design, Costume Design, Prop Design
2D Effects – Apply motion attributes of observable physical phenomena, Traditional 2d effects, Game 2D Effects
