Presenter
Gaye Lynn Scott for Carolynn Reed
Minutes
Gaye Lynn discussed late course form submissions for additional updates needed to Math and Development Math courses for catalog 2021-22 that did not make this C&P agenda deadline for proposals. She read the following email from Carolynn: On Thu, Mar 25, 2021 at 8:44 PM Carolynn Reed wrote: Hi all, I'm sorry we didn't make the deadline. Everything the past month has been a blur. The only ones I'm concerned about are for MATD 0414, MATD 0424, MATD 0444. We brought 0424 and 0444 to the last meeting and they were approved. Then we went back and cleaned up the description and learning outcomes of the 3 to better match the content of the courses. The changes are minor (removing a few specific math topics, adding terms to stress the topic coverage is at the developmental level), but we want the descriptions to accurately describe what's covered. The description and learning outcomes for all 3 courses are very similar since they are the 3 algebraic corequisite paired with the MATH 1314, MATH 1324, MATH 1414. We wanted to ensure we were describing the developmental content covered and not the MATH level of the listed topics. For the other MATD submittals and for NCBM 0214, we removed MATD 0332 as a prerequisite because we have not offered that course in several years and it's expired. We also expired some NCBM courses. Is that considered cleanup or more substantial? Carolynn Gaye Lynn asked how does the Committee wished to proceed: approval based on the description provided in Carolynn’s email or some other option such as an email vote once the course applications are available to be reviewed. Jorge Lynch motioned to approve right now; Cathy Angell seconded. Approved. Action Item: Pending course modification and expiration forms in the Curriculum Management System will need to be formally approved and processed for inclusion in Catalog 2021-22. 1. Degree Health (Tomi Welch) Tomi Welch and Jacob Williamson discussed the current degree limitations: Students cannot receive an Associate of Arts in General Studies at the same time or after receiving another associate or bachelor degree. Students may not receive a certificate at the same time as or after receiving an Associate of Applied Science, Bachelor of Applied Science, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in the same program of study. Students may earn only one of each of the following transfer degrees: Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Arts in Teaching. Tomi is requesting the C&P Committee’s consideration on revising the current degree limitations and recommended revisions. Feedback from the Committee was positive. Workforce programs have been advocating for this change for years; will facilitate stacking of credentials without delaying a semester or more. This can increase employability to have additional certificates that show skills in various areas. It was recommended that certificates and AA/AS degrees be awarded in the same concentration. Daniel J. Chupe-O'Hanlon requested research to be done on how this might affect state reporting. Gaye Lynn mentioned that any changes to the degree limitations would require a formal proposal to be presented to ASAC for their consideration.in order for any recommendations to move forward. Jacob suggested the following language could be used in the proposal: ACC will award one AA/AS/AAT to a student. Additional AA/AS can be awarded to a student at the recommendation of the department, if the additional degree contains substantial additional material. It was also asked if there is an Administrative Rule/Board Policy on degree limitations. None can be found. Perhaps the proposal could include that an AR be added. Brandon Whatley motioned for the Workgroup to develop draft documentation for an ASAC proposal, once due diligence has been conducted, such as researching transfer rates/timing for those schools who offer second degrees, if there is any impact to state reporting, whether a draft AR should also be introduced, etc. Seconded by Cathy Angell. All approved for the Degree Health Workgroup to move forward with drafting a proposal, after conducting further research on how reporting and other considerations such as transfer success and job placement/advancement might be affected. 2. Approved Core Curriculum Course List Updates (see THECB Core Info Sheet) (Ron Johns) 3. Discussion on forming a workgroup to update the Curriculum and Programs Committee Manual (Gaye Lynn) a. Current posted manual: Curriculum and Programs Committee Manual 2015 (Dec 18, 2015) b. 07-20-20 C&P Manual 2020 DRAFT #1 Gaye Lynn: The current manual is severely outdated; reviewing and updating it could be worked on later this spring into the summer in preparation for the fall. She asked how the procedures might need to be revised when the College transitions to the new ERP, Workday. Georgia Branch: the components of a proposal packets, the approval process, and THECB and SACSCOC resources should still be reviewed and updated; references to the current Ellucian system can be revised later. Gaye Lynn asked for volunteers to form a workgroup to begin revising and updating the current manual. Ron volunteered to serve; Georgia as well. Matthew volunteered to review the draft. More volunteers are needed and a Workforce Dean should serve…Gretchen will follow up. This workgroup should be formalized and begin work in the next couple of months so progress can be discussed at the June C&P meeting or through emails. 4. Minutes – February 19, 2021 (see Draft) Jim Christianson motioned; seconded by Jorge Lynch. Approved.
