Committee Business - Syllabus Task Force: Master Syllabus Proposal
Presenter
Ron Johns
Minutes
Ron provided a finalized proposal from the Syllabus Task Force, which was formed at the March 25, 2022 Curriculum and Programs Committee Meeting to work on the Faculty Senate’s request to replace multiple pages of the Master Syllabus pertaining to college policies with a readily available link in all course Blackboard shells to a website where the college policies are listed instead. Ron had already checked with Seth Wilkerson, LMS Manager, who confirmed that there will not be any issues with incorporating administrative/informational Master Syllabus link(s) into the BlackBoard system’s course shell. “The website to which the link would connect is the College Policies website of the Academic Outcomes Assessment office. This is maintained by the Associate Dean of Assessment & Evaluation and could be updated as needed. The website should also be periodically monitored to make sure direct links to the relevant student resources are accurate and enhanced as needed to make sure it is accessible.” The Syllabus Task Force identified communicating these updates to the Master Syllabus and Blackboard will be the biggest challenge, both to students and faculty; the consensus was that the faculty themselves will have to highlight and emphasize these sections in communications with their students. The communication to faculty about these Master Syllabus changes can be done through a number of channels already available. Ron Johns will follow up with Rachel Barrera, Interim Director of the Office of Faculty Communications, to develop a communication plan to inform faculty through TLED’s various communication platforms. Cathy Angell motioned to approve implementing the Syllabus Task Force’s Master Syllabus Proposal; seconded by Jonathan Buckstead. Approved.
