This generated a discussion of college policies and department policies related to Internship. Some suggestions were: - written warnings to students; training for supervisors to advise what issues may need to be dealt with (Brooke); - asking students directly how they feel they are doing, a self-evaluation (Julie); - 1 to 2 hour orientation for site supervisors (Jack); - require students meet for (3) sessions with a counselor to give students time to explore their choice of degree; adding that counselors should also have training (Sandra); - the faculty will review these suggestions in a department meeting. Curriculum Changes for 2016-2017 The Provost recommended all disciplines add an Effective Learning class to their degree plans for those who are first time students with fewer than 12 successful semester credit hours. Students with over 12 semester credit hours may take Speech classes instead. The Effective Learning class has been placed in the first semester of the Addictions Counseling, General Human Services, and Therapeutic Recreation AAS. MOTION by Julie to approve the changes; seconded by Sandra. RGC/College Updates The temporary closing of the Rio Grande Campus (RGC) for renovation has been delayed. Due to construction at the Highland Campus (HLC), RGC is now scheduled to close the end of summer 2017. The College is reviewing its organizational structure. The book currently influencing the restructure and being circulated throughout ACC is Redesigning America’s Community Colleges. Some colleges are using Guided Pathways. The idea behind the revamping is to cluster together similar programs under one name (however, this shouldn’t effect technology programs). This may include administrative restructure (Deans, etc.); Liz stated she was asked to provide feedback on Department Chair duties. There is some suggestion that by next fall there may be structural changes within ACC. New Student Orientation for HUSE Human Services received a grant in 2014 specific to the creation of an online orientation for HUSE students. Sandra worked together with Liz and IT to include HUSE department expectations. Employers and students were surveyed about common questions each had about the program (before students enrolled). Sandra also researched two colleges who already use online orientation to obtain more information on its effectiveness. The online orientation requires a login and directs students to their career track. The online orientation site in not finalized and could include quizzes that students can take back to their Advisors. Rick suggested including student testimonials about the program on the site. Tom suggested including some notation asking students talk to HUSE faculty about their educational options after leaving ACC. Julie suggested providing 4-Year degree options about what will transfer. Liz reiterated the idea behind the orientation is to inform students about program expectations. Sandra suggested adding a brief video spot of Liz (Department Chair) in the introduction of the site. Discipline Assessment Cycle for 2015-2016 Supervisor Rating: Has Skills Necessary to Work in our Agency - this is the measure on the Supervisor Evaluation Form. The goal is for students to get a 4 or 5 on the scale. Current Marketing Efforts Events – Liz advised overall, HUSE classes are doing well but a marketing strategy is needed to build the Therapeutic Recreation program. More students are needed. The Marketing department is working on placing “key” words in our HUSE website to get the attention of more students. Lynn, Liz and Skye will attend a college and career fair; Denny and Lynn attended a college fair in Septermber. Revised “Push Cards” - these are small flyers. Skye has also designed a bulletin board for the RGC campus. Group Email System - The College IT department can now offer assistance in providing departments with information about students who are in our programs. The data would reflect students who have applied but not yet enrolled, etc. RGC doesn’t provide tours like other campuses. Jeanna added ACC is not “user-friendly” to first-time students. Lynn advised the new student orientation and Marketing are trying to make it better.

Liz shared the Substance Abuse Prevention I and II classes are both listed in our degree plans. Classes are three credit hours each and the lab requires students do volunteer work. Currently, there aren’t enough prevention sites for students to do internship hours. Julie offered that Lifeworks will accept them, as well as in her own area. Jeanna stated that by 2016, TX Department of Family & Protective Services will begin accepting AAS as an alternative educational requirement for employment. There will also be more opportunity for more internships. The specification for employment is to have 60 college hours and ACC’s AAS qualifies students. Brooke updated on their merger and the beginning of their rebranding. They are presently working with 14 state grants. They have hired a new Executive Director. Tom advised that Park’s MSW program is not yet finalized. He’s talked with the Department Chair and the program will be a distance learning program at Park; students will do their Internship online as well. Park has signed a new 7-year lease at their present location. Tom has been promoted to Regional Director of Admissions and will remain in Austin. There will not be an Admissions representative in Austin and Park will be hiring a new Campus Director. Jack shared Bluebonnet Trails Community Services is growing. They have locations in Marble Falls, Round Rock, Bastrop, Seguin and are now licensed in Lulling and Taylor. They have started a substance prevention program for adolescents in Taylor. Jack suggested partnering with Council on Recovery for referrals and is trying to integrate their work with community partnerships. Adjourned at 10:44am.
