Hello Advisory Committee members,
Happy holidays month! Thank you for continuing to be my sounding board for the Hospitality programs at ACC. I appreciate your voice and perspective as we work to bring students into the workforce with as much knowledge and enthusiasm as we can instill!
There are a few new members to the group included on this thread. In addition to Jan Allen with Jan Allen Enterprises, Delores Crum with Premiere Events, Jennifer Currier with Hyatt Place, Rob Gillette with Renaissance Austin, Cindy Lo with Red Velvet Events, Susan Richardson with Visit Austin, Britt Udemi with Hilton Austin Airport, and Molly Waterman with the Hotel Van Zandt, I am also including Joe Bolash from the Hilton Austin, Ashley Sansalone from Whim Hospitality, Mercedes Feris with Method 3 Events, and Tabatha Shaw with ABIA. (soon to be called AUS, I hear) Again, thank you for participating!
Before I get too far, I wanted to mention to you that we are saying goodbye to one of our long-time adjuncts, Latonia Booth, a planner with RTI Surgical and our instructor for the Introduction to Conventions & Meetings class and the Expo & Trade Show class. If you have colleagues that are experienced in this planning area and might want to try their hand at teaching at the college level, please let me know and I'll reach out to them.

Overview of Student Demographics:
Number of students in classes for fall 2019: 250 students, broken down to about 48% in hotel/restaurant, 37% Meeting/Events Planning and 15% Travel/ Tourism.
Average Age: Between 25-40 (but there are definitely outliers)
*Generally the students are working and often have families. Many students take a class or two a semester with no class in the summer, some students take 2-3 classes per semester.
Upcoming:
We will be moving our department to the Highland Learning Center (The old Highland Mall location at 2222 and IH 35) for the fall 2020 semester. This will be the completion of Phase 2 of 3 - Phase 1 has been operating for about 3 years. We are excited to have a purpose-built location which will include a special events classroom that has a floral cooler, cabinetry and hanging bars for tablescape linens and settings as well as an AV storage area for rounds/high boys for event designs. Additionally we will have a mock hotel room for examining wall and floor coverings, cleaning product usage, room inspection, and housekeeping equipment. And we will have an operating travel planning office to give students the chance to interact with clients and plan travel options. Students will be available for (mostly ACC) staff to come by and get help with their upcoming travel. I look forward to inviting you all out to see our new facilities.
Request to Consider: Adding options for restrictive electives
The real reason for this note is to ask your approval for the addition of class options in the restrictive electives category. Each of the degrees and certificates have an option(s) for the student to choose a restrictive elective of their interest. I want to add a couple more classes to their list of choices for the Meeting Planning Certificate and the Travel & Tourism Certificate. We already run the classes listed, but the students in those certificates can't take them if they are not specifically in the restrictive elective list. This change is to broaden the choices for those two programs, and we offer them already as part of other degrees and certificates. All of the classes are under the Hospitality umbrella.
With your approval, here are the changes that I would like to propose to the ACC Curriculum Council:
For the Meeting Planning Certificate:
Add Restricted Electives: HAMG 1313 (Front Office Mgmt) and HAMG 1324 (Human Resources Mgmt) These classes can help planners with rooming lists, housing and registration and HR understanding.
For the Travel Management Certificate:
Add Restricted Elective: HAMG 1324 (Human Resources Mgmt) This may interest students wanting to start a business in travel management as well as gaining knowledge around all HR issues.
I know this was a long email, but I wanted to be sure the newer members had a bit more understanding of the program offerings. If you are still with me, thank you, and let me know if you approve the proposed changes to the restrictive electives for the two certificates.
Happy holidays!
Best, Liz
