2. Badging Discussion (Gaye Lynn Scott and Gretchen Riehl)
Gretchen: Badging will identify certifications, skills, etc. on transcripts; particularly helpful for Workforce programs for potential employers and for Transfer programs for applying to particular programs at transfer institutions. Question: what, if any, role will the C&P Committee play in this initiative
Matthew: Documenting and demonstrating skills/academic attainment; currently have some form of badging in Continuing Ed; need a clear, thought out process on how to assess and standardize the awarding of badges
Tomi: supports badges but not to list every skills/course on transcript; is there a way to award them virtually? Matthew: Agrees; Mozilla has a virtual framework for badging
Gretchen: would assist with making skills visible to potential employers; enhancement to degree, not replace them.
Linda: this will be similar to awarding a credential; documentation needs to be well defined
Matthew: Clearly the content experts should be in charge of the content. But there’s a lot more to a badge. We need for instance, the deployment /implementation side (a server, etc.), a graphic that constitutes the digital badge, etc. Plus no department just makes up courses independent of the institutional processes for approval.
Daniel: Credly software is one of the biggest ones being researched
Gaye Lynn: Should we form or authorize an exploratory work group?
Gretchen and Gaye Lynn: bring to the March agenda for further discussion and demonstration
Linda: has questions; mail Gretchen and Gaye Lynn with questions
Cathy Angell motioned to approve; Victoria Taylor seconded. Approved.
