Management
Presenter
Don Hurwitz
Minutes
Don and Mike discussed the inception of a Small Business Entrepreneur Program; it is designed for students who wish to run their own business based on the skills they develop in specialized workforce 1-year certificate programs. The new Entrepreneurship AAS will accept up to 24 credits from approved, accredited Workforce level one certificate programs (i.e. Motorcycle Repair, Culinary Arts) and will include an additional 15 credits of college mandated General Education and 21 hours of targeted business courses that include all phases of business planning, funding, marketing, managing, growing and sustaining small businesses. The results will be graduates who are not only skilled in their chosen specialization but have the necessary skills to create or take over small businesses in the Austin area. Since this program crosses disciplines, it will require an internal advisory committee in addition to the typical external one. The vision is to offer space at HLC so program advisors and community mentors can meet, collaborate, and support students…similar to the Biotechnology program incubators. The first certificate specialization to feed into the new AAS is the Motorcycle Advanced Repairer Level 1 Certificate. There was discussion on how Financial Aid will be awarded since only 24 credit hours from the certificate will flow into the AAS; Jason Briseno said that the awarded amount would be prorated. Mike asked members if they liked the concept of a Small Business Entrepreneur Program and if it should move forward to implementation. Revisions and refinements will be made as more information is collected on program needs. All agreed that the program is a good idea and should be implemented.

Business, Government and Technical Communications
Presenter
Reed Peoples/Wayne Butler
Minutes
ETWR 2377 Advanced Business Communication (3-3-0) – move from owner department Business, Government and Technical Communications (TECO) to Accounting (ACCO)
Wayne is the incoming chair for Business, Government and Technical Communications, formerly chaired by David McMurrey. Wayne informed the committee that this request was made initially made by David and that Reed has brought him up to speed.
Reed explained that with the restructuring of instructional programs to designated Areas of Study (AoS), the Business, Government and Technical Communications program is now assigned to Liberal Arts – Humanities and Communications AoS; therefore, ETWR 2377 is no longer technical a business course. Since this course was designed for Accounting students, then it needs to be moved to the Accounting program so it can be under Business AoS.
Matthew stated that he, as Dean of Liberal Arts, Humanities and Communications, was not apprised of this course change until it was already on the agenda; therefore, it was not adequately discussed and approved by all affected decision makers.
After some deliberation, changing ETWR 2377 ownership department was tabled until further discussions between Accounting and Business, Government and Technical Communications department chairs (Reed and Wayne) and their respective Deans (Lorlie Ellis and Matthew) can be completed and decisions are agreed upon the best course of action, such as expire ETWR 2377 course and add a new Accounting communications course.
