Update on the Department and ACC
Dr. Peoples gave an update on the department and ACC. We have a new full-time faculty, Dr. Johnny Howard Tracie Miller left as full-time faculty and assistant department chair but will remain as adjunct and would like to be on the advisory board. Karina Parlato will leave as full-time faculty after this Fall but would like to be on the advisory board. Artificial Intelligence – changing the future role of bookkeepers. La Tasha Roberts is working on integrating AI in ACNT 1303 (Accounting for non-majors) first. La Tasha redesigned 1303 to introduce blockchain for a competition. La Tasha was invited to Hackathon to be a mentor for other instructors. Tony mentioned that he thinks that AI may affect fraud more than using Bitcoin. CPA Evolution – For the core exam in tax, the department has been discussing replacing ACNT 1331/1347 (ind/entity tax) with a Survey of Tax course for students not specializing in Tax Compliance & Planning. Denise White explained how the evolution is changing to have 3 exams over the core (Audit, Financial, & Tax), and then the 4th exam would be specialized (Tax compliance and planning, Business analysis and reporting, and Information systems and controls). Exam will change in January 2024. The TXBPA is changing class requirements in Jan 2024 to accommodate class changes and requirements. Julie Sigety asked if corporate tax would be included in the core. There will be some knowledge of entity taxation, but not to the extent of what is taught in ACNT 1347. Dr. Peoples proposed adding a new Survey of Tax course to fulfill the tax CORE requirements for students not specializing in TCP. All board members agreed. Apprenticeships – Kristy McDermott and Johnny Howard have been working with Edgar Medina, ACC Apprenticeship Coordinator to meet with employers and present this concept, explain how apprenticeships are different from internships, and the benefits. Started with apprenticeships for just the bookkeeping/technician certificates, but then added enrolled agent certificate in the presentations to employers. We would like to expand this opportunity to the professional (CPA) students also. Johnny and Kristy hosted a resume bootcamp for the technician students in anticipation of apprenticeship applicants & the Accounting Career Fair. Accounting Student Club Update Sponsored by the TXCPA Austin Chapter, we had a Resume & Interview Workshop in October in anticipation of the Accounting Career Fair. Planning to have the Accounting Career Fair on 11/12 at the ACC Highland Learning Center campus. TXCPA Austin Chapter invited all member-employers to participate and all student-members to attend. It looks like we may have a large attendance, which we were not sure about since this is our first career fair since COVID. Technician students cross-training in bookkeeping/tax (1331/1347 courses) – table for next meeting Spring Meeting - The next meeting will be scheduled for late April/early May (after tax season).
