Guest Speaker
Presenter
Nancy Stano
Minutes
Discussion: The committee discussed the Student Rights and Responsibilities information that is currently in the Student Handbook. The committee would like to work on promoting a more inclusive environment.
Example of Nursing department handbook wording, shared by Nina Almasy during the meeting.
Austin Community College (ACC) Professional Nursing Department is committed to a culture of civility, safety, and inclusivity that embraces all individuals. According to the American Nurses Association (2019), registered nurses in the healthcare continuum and academia have an ethical, moral, and legal responsibility to treat registered nurses and all members of the health care team, health care consumers, families, and communities with dignity and respect to provide a healthy and safe environment.
In addition, Nursing students encompass the professional nursing role and, as representatives of ACC, shall exhibit and practice civil behaviors. Incivility is defined as the “disregard and insolence for others, causing an atmosphere of disrespect, intimidation, conflict, and stress,” and the most serious being a threat or causing harm to another (Clark, 2008) and is not tolerated. Together, we will support a collaborative, equitable, and professional teaching and learning environment for all.
Decisions/Actions:
1) The committee will review the Student Handbook and will make edit suggestions to include what a student should do and not just what a student should not do.
2) This project will not be a part of a subcommittee, this project will stay with the entire SRRC.
3) Dr. Kinney will work on having Dr. Samuel Echevarria-Cruz and Mr. Larry Davis come present.
4) The committee will work on naming this project. Dr. Kinney suggested “Civility” or “Common Ground”.
