TSI exemption work committee recommendation
Presenter
Jeanne Chaltain
Minutes
Dr. Matthew Daude Laurents presented the following recommendation to ASAC: Use the Core Curriculum in place of the current TSI Approved Course List to determine TSI exemption. ASAC asked AAC to provide research and data for this recommendation. For example, weigh removing the TSI barrier versus students being underprepared for courses. A compromise is recommended from the Work Committee. The Work Committee looked at what other community colleges have in place for exemption. Foreign Languages are on the common core list, which means students can test out of reading and writing without having spoken English. Because of this, there is no guarantee that the student is prepared for a course such as ENGL 1301. Some colleges had a more specific list, which includes ENGL, HIST, PSYC, SOCI, PHIL. The Work Committee drafted a two tier list. They would like to get PHIL approved for this list. One way the Work Committee approaches TSI completion is having a grade of C or better in any two of the listed courses, which increases the odds that a student is TSI complete in both Reading and Writing. The Math department does not wish to make any changes to the current ACC list. Now that the TSI 2.0 is one exam, it causes issues with the reading only and writing only component. Students have to either retest or take a co-rec. This committee wants to ensure that ACC removes challenging TSI completion barriers without failing to set students up for success, while maintaining equity. The list of two combination courses extends the ability for students to be TSI complete, which removes the TSI barrier while also ensuring the student has demonstrated reading AND writing ability. This avoids the aspect of being underprepared. Action: The subcommittee will summarize their recommendation. This topic will continue to be looked at. Data will be shared with this committee to review.
