Previous Advisory Committee Meeting Concerns
Presenter
Janet Barlow
Minutes
• Students are not prepared for Stress Echo upon hire: (This is not an entry level skill required by ASE standards, but is becoming a preferred skill)
As a resolution DCS has added Stress Echo to the curriculum and has purchased a treadmill. In the Students final Fall Semester they are required to perform at least two Stress Echo’s. We will require more from the current and future classes.
• Students are unfamiliar with pediatric scanning techniques
As a resolution DCS has added a “Pedi day” to their Summer Clinical lab schedule to coincide with their didactic learning of fetal circulation and complications
Current DCS statistics and updates:
• Class of 2009: 100% pass rate on the SPI & Registry
• Class of 2010: 7 out of 8 that have passed both
one student has passed the SPI and is scheduled to take the Registry
• New Survey’s were sent out in February to 2009 Graduates and Employers
Survey’s are slowly returning to campus
• Future Survey’s will be e-mailed through Survey Monkey

Changes and updates to the Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography Program:
• Offering both on-line and hybrid (both on-line & on campus) courses are offered
• Physics 101 is now completely on-line
• SPI testing can be taken at any time. The outline has changed and now includes a
“FIX” an image format with controls for gains, TGC’s, depth, focus & frequency
• National Education Curriculum for Cardiac Sonography has voted in ASE Guidelines
• Labs are not shared with other programs so students have more open lab availability
• Spring Semester full day labs (previously ½ day)
• Due to this change students now log 4-5 live scans a week in lab (including SIM)
• Simulator (AKA Bob SIM)-ACC is the only school in the State of TX with one
• SIM training: students can evaluate pathologies not seen in lab and rarely seen in clinical
• Tutorials- given weekly to students unless hands on scanning is available
• Evaluations/ Challenges for students are all done on campus in the Fall I, Spring &
Summer Semesters to promote stronger scanning skills. We will only be asking
Clinical instructors to grade evaluations in the Fall II semester.
• PAC’s digital reading data base can be viewed at both the EVC and RRC
• Student’s will be required to evaluate their own images starting in the Summer Semester
• Groups from local High Schools are now coming onto Campus for tour’s
We inform them of shortages Nationwide in the health care field, pay scales and
the on-line information sessions for Sonography
• Gina has updated the Sonography Website:
