The following request was emailed to the Game Design Advisory Committee Members on April 12, 2018:
Hello Advisory Members -
We respect your time and schedules so we are sending this request over email.
We have a couple of revisions to our Game Design AAS & Certificate to submit for your approval and/or comments:
• In our current degree, we require students to take a Fundamentals of Programming course from the Computer Science department. However, as of last month, the Computer Science department has expired that course and our students do not have a relevant course to take in its place. We are requesting your approval to develop and implement a new course: GAME 1371 - Coding Basics for Designers. We feel this course will be better suited and focused for our game design students. Please see the attached WECM Local Needs Form for GAME 1371 for the course description and learning outcomes.
• In addition, we are requesting the removal of our Video Game Art 1 course and replacing it with a Logic course that will be tailored to game design majors. Because we currently have no Logic course, we feel this will greatly enrich our students and better prepare them for the rigors of programming. We've attached the PHIL 2303 - Logic Course (general description/outcomes) if you would like further information on the course specifics.
We are also attaching a comparison of the current and the proposed AAS and Certificate Plans for your reference and approval.
Please reply no later than Monday, April 16th so we can get it to our curriculum committee by April 20th for approval for the Fall 2018 semester.
Members below replied with a vote of approval:
• Gordon Walton – Approved for both changes
• Mark Nau – Approved w/reservations that the Logic class may be a little long
• Rich Vogel – Approved both changes
• Billy Joe Cain – Approved with reservations to evaluate the Logic class in a year
• Nicholas Macron – Approved – no reservations
• Jason Hughes – Approved for both changes
Six of nine members replied in favor of the revisions and two members suggested we have the Logic course evaluated in a year to determine if length and content is sufficient for our students. Six members voted to approve degree revisions and both course additions. Votes passed with the majority of the committee’s approval.
