Discussion: Mary proposed the additional of one new course and modification of plans. Add ITSE 1302 Computer Programming: LabVIEW (3-3-1). Course will be used as an elective in the Programming AAS. National Instruments has requested that we offer this course. It will be added to the programming level I electives for the Programming Certificates and the Associate Degree Computer Programming. Revise Awards Microcomputer Applications User and Desktop Support Specialization AAS becomes Information Technology User and Computer Support Specialization AAS • Award name change aligns with terminology used in industry as reflected in job postings. • Resequenced courses Microcomputer Applications – Applications Specialization AAS becomes Information Technology User and Computer Support Specialization AAS • Award name change aligns with terminology used in industry as reflected in job postings. • Consolidate the COSC 1300 and COSC 1301 in the degree into the new COSC 1301. • Add ITSW 1304, Spreadsheets, to the degree. • Add a Computer Studies elective to the third semester of the degree to allow more options for the student. This also increase the number of semester hours in the degree. • Modify the Computer elective in the fourth semester of the degree to remove the Advanced notation. • Move several courses around in order to accommodate the above changes. Building and Construction Technology course revisions were approved in the February meeting and changes to the courses have been incorporated into these award plans. The department plans to take the new local need courses to THECB Workforce Education Course Manual (WECM) review workshops in the future and propose they be incorporated into the WECM. Revise Awards Welding Technology Arts Metals AAS • WLDG 1430 (GMAW/FCAW) and WLDG 1434 (GTAW) are being added to enhance the Arts Metals students’ welding skills, especially in processes commonly utilized in the industry. • Special Topics courses are being converted to local needs with unique course numbers to add transparency to transcripts. • WLDG 1437 Introduction to Welding “Metallurgy” title is being updated to bring it into accordance with WECM. • COSC 1301 is being removed from the degree as the computer literacy requirement is satisfied by WLDG 1413. • The former capstone of WLDG 1427 is being replaced by an option of WLDG 2478 or WLDG 2440 (depending on the track chosen by the student) WLDG 2478 is a course being created as a local needs course. • The department’s Advisory Board overwhelmingly supports these changes. Welding Technology Arts Metals Certificate becomes Arts Metals: Metalsmithing Certificate • With a rewrite of the Art Metals Associate’s Degree to offer students the option of a sculpture specialization or a metalsmithing specialization. The two certificates are being reworked to reflect these two same specializations. • WLDG 1430 Introduction to Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) is being substituted for WLDG 1428 (SMAW) to enhance the Art Metals students’ welding skills in these processes more commonly utilized by their industry. • Special Topics courses are being converted to local needs with unique course numbers to add transparency to transcripts. • WLDG 1408 and WLDG 2440 are being removed from the Metalsmithing (formerly Art Metals) certificate and replaced with courses that have metalsmithing-specific skills to make the two certificates distinct. • The department’s Advisory Board overwhelmingly supports these changes. Welding Technology Metal Sculpture Certificate becomes Arts Metals: Metal Sculpture Certificate • With a rewrite of the Art Metals Associate’s Degree to offer students the option of a sculpture specialization or a metalsmithing specialization, the two certificates are being reworked to reflect these two same specializations. • WLDG 1430 Introduction to Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) is being substituted for WLDG 1428 (SMAW) to enhance the Art Metals students’ welding skills in these processes more commonly utilized by their industry. • Special Topics courses are being converted to local needs with unique course numbers to add transparency to transcripts. • The department’s Advisory Board overwhelmingly supports these changes. Welding Technology Inspection Certificate • WLDG 1427 title and description are being updated to bring them into accordance with WECM. • NDTE 2411 title and description are being updated to bring them into accordance with WECM. • The department’s Advisory Board overwhelmingly supports these changes. Welding Technology Code Welding AAS. • Flux Code Arc Welding (FCAW) is being added to the title of WLDG 1430 to accentuate the fact that this skill is also taught in this course. • The General Education requirement for SPCH 1315 is being changed to allow the student to select any course from the Oral Communication section of the General Education Course List. • The former capstone of WLDG 1427 did not match WECM and is being updated to a new local need course WLDG 2479 to allow the department to continue to offer students the same educational experience and the opportunity to achieve welding certification with their degree. • WLDG 1437 title is being updated to match WECM. The department’s Advisory Board overwhelmingly supports these changes. Welding Technology Pipe Welding Certificate • The former capstone of WLDG 1427 did not match WECM and is being updated to a new local needs course WLDG 2479 to allow the department to continue to offer students the same educational experience and the opportunity to achieve welder qualification with their degree. • The department’s Advisory Board overwhelmingly supports these changes. Decision/Actions: Robert Bermea moved to approve WLDG 1476, WLDG 1477, WLDG 1478, WLDG 1479, WLDG 2476, WLDG 2477, and WLDG 2478. Second by Cathy Angell. Approved.
