Hello Delores, Jennifer, Rob, Cindy, Molly, Joe, Laura, Tabatha and Dawn,
I want very much to invite you to the new campus at Highland Learning Center. Each time I try, well - you probably know what happens. ACC is staying with remote learning for the first two weeks of the spring semester, but hopefully I will be able to invite everyone later in the semester to tour the new facility.
I know you are all dealing with the ons and offs of the pandemic and the associated staffing, scheduling and bookings. If you could help me with a quick thought, I would appreciate it.
We have traditionally had three areas of certificates and degrees - Hospitality Management, Meeting & Event Planning, and Travel & Tourism. Our Travel & Tourism has always been our smallest offering, and it basically trained those students wanting to be travel agents. As it was a small program, the impact of Covid has really reduced student interest. And the travel industry has changed significantly over the years with the ability of online search and programs that aid travel planning.
I do have a good solution for this offering. I would like to move it to our Continuing Education program and revamp it to be a 6 to 8-week program with an optional travel certificate at completion. This would fast-track a student that wanted to become a travel agent by consolidating the curriculum to be specific and limited to just that interest. It would allow students a shorter, faster program and they can begin working within months instead of several semesters. The Continuing Education department has been involved in creating this option and welcomes the program. We will continue to offer TRVM 1391- CVB/DMCs and TRVM 2372- Sustainable Tourism as electives for our students.
We would also like to change out CHEF 1301- Basic Foods back to IFWA 1301- Introduction to Foods for the Hospitality and Meeting & Event Programs. Culinary has added IFWA 1301 back to their schedule just for our students. It is a less culinary intensive class that will be offered just to our student.
If you feel this would be a good plan of action, please reply in the affirmative. If you have questions or comments, I am happy to talk through it more. Thank you for taking the time to review this.
Health and happiness for 2022,
Liz

Hi Liz - I am in favor of this change and similarly to how you include us for speaking topics on DMC / meeting planning, I encourage you to recruit/reach out to the newer travel advisors that are all on Social Media posting about what they do.
As an example, I know Michele Schwartz who used to be a certified wedding planner and during the pandemic, she became a certified travel agent with a strong emphasis on Disney trips and is growing her business right now.
Just a thought.
I hope everyone is staying safe...we had another breakthrough COVID case with no symptoms this week on our team (the only reason she knew she might be contagious is be/c a friend of hers tested positive) so we are having to test all of our team again (sigh). It's been so exhausting doing this every few days.
Stay safe all,
Cindy

Hello All:
I think it makes sense to leverage the technology and the Continuing Education Department. Seems like a great solution creating engagement with the Hospitality Industry at a time when we need it most!

I like that solution, Liz. And Cindy’s additional thoughts below make a lot of sense. Travel agents do really seem to be specializing in specific areas. I think the other potential area of employment to explore is internal corporate travel planning.
