Review process for advising veterans
Presenter
Yolanda
Minutes
Yolanda presented copies of Coordinating Board rules for discussion and correct interpretation. Yolanda reported that she had talked to Dr. Suzanne Morales-Vale from the Coordinating Board. Dr. Morales-Vale confirmed that colleges have never had the flexibility to interpret requirements for students who are exempt from testing. Colleges have only had flexibility in requiring higher placement scores. Students who are exempt cannot be required to take the assessment test. They are considered college ready. Doug stated that he has always understood Ms Vale’s statement as the correct interpretation of the state law. Although, some veterans will benefit from developmental coursework, legally they can register into any entry level college course. We can advise them to remediate but not require them. The committee agreed to amend 4.04.004 to comply with state law. Other administrative rules citing TSI compliance are correct. Decision/Actions: Committee suggested that exempt students choosing to test be allowed to test for free. This recommendation will be forwarded to Dr. Christensen. Follow-up items: AR 4.04.004 will be corrected to comply with state law.

Math advising for students who are TSI exempt
Presenter
Yolanda
Minutes
Currently, students who are TSI exempt can take Math 1332, 1333, 0r 1342. Students who wanted to enroll in Math 1314 are required to take assessment test. If their scores place them into developmental courses they are mandated to complete the sequence regardless of future testing reflecting higher scores. These exempt students are being removed from MATD 0390 because of their initial scores and not following the sequence. Knowing that they are TSI exempt ‘how can we correct the problem? Constance responded that she would rather have TSI exempt students placed into MATD 0390 not just be advised into the class. In regards to instructors removing these students from class, Constance will take the concern to the Math Department under one condition. She would like for students to understand that TSI exempt students wanting to enroll in Math 1314 can’t be advised into appropriate Math course without assessment placement scores. Students who are advised to test, choose not to test and enroll into Math 1314 will be required to sign a contract stating that were provided this information and choose to stay in the course. Decisions/Actions: 1.Constance will take info to developmental task force. 2.Constance will create contract for distribution to advisors/counselors/Math faculty. 3.Placement chart will be revised to reflect discussion; delete Matd 0360 since it is no longer offered. Discuss the above with math department and bring back recommendations to AAC
