ASHP Site Visit Findings and Response
Lisa McCartney, PHRA Program Department Chair
Summary of ACC ASHP Reaccreditation Findings from Site Visit on 11/16/2010 AREAS OF NONCOMPLIANCE None. AREAS OF PARTIAL COMPLIANCE 1. Some program faculty who teach pharmacy-related classes do not hold active membership in a national pharmacy organization and the corresponding state organization. (Item IV-B) Response: We have asked ASHP for a clarification on this issue. All of our faculty members hold active memberships in pharmacy organizations; however, not all of the organizations (NPTA) have both a national and corresponding state organization. Additionally, this is not something that is required for accreditation in any of the other health science programs and, from an HR standpoint, may be problematic as a “requirement”. We will provide further information once we get a response from ASHP. 2. Some program graduates have not achieved all educational goals and learning objectives designated for successful completion of the program. (Item VI-B) Response: The surveyors recommend that the column labeled not applicable be removed from the evaluation forms. This will directly affect the preceptors. Review the two handouts (pre and post survey checklists). Discussion item: Can we remove areas that truly are not applicable to the practice site? How can the area be made applicable (i.e. discussion with student, written information, observation, etc)? 3. Paraphrase: Add the following items of training for program students – immunizations, investigational drugs. Response: We are adding (effective fall 2011) information and training about immunizations to PHRA 1313. We are adding (effective fall 2011) information and training about investigational drugs to PHRA 1349. Discussion item: Brainstorming ways to provide this information to students? Do any of the sites work with immunizations or investigational drugs? 4. Paraphrase: Needed to make a minor wording revision to two of the course objectives (PHRA 1205 and PHRA 1441) to remove the references to: conflict negotiation and teamwork. Response: This change has been made effective immediately. 5. Training plans developed for students do not include students’ employment goals. (Item VII-F-1) Response: Added an area for the students to include their employment goals on the training plan form. This change has been made, effective immediately. The members had discussion as to how to comply with those areas of partial compliance. Several good suggestions were made which Lisa McCartney will consider while working to fulfill compliance requirements.
8)
ACPE Providership Update
Lisa McCartney, PHRA Program Department Chair
Lisa McCartney said that, along with the ACPE application, she has created the three CE programs that ACPE requires as part of the initial providership application. She hopes to finish the application soon and then send it on to the Dean and CE for review. Hoping to send to ACPE in June. Lisa will provide more information at a later date.
9)
College Update
Eileen Klein, Dean of Health Sciences
Eileen Klein had good news; the PHRA program had secured an IV labeling system. Eileen Klein also had other news regarding the budget for next fiscal year. ACC is expected to give back 12% of the funds back and as a result there will be a hiring freeze, defer tech and computer purchases, due to moneys being tight next year. In addition, Eileen announced that there was a legislative bill that was considering consolidating the licensing boards.
10)
Program Update a. Current Enrollment b. Fall Enrollment
Lisa McCartney, PHRA Program Department Chair
Lisa McCartney reported that we currently have around 70 students in the program. For the spring 2011 we had 33 students accepted into the program. For the fall 2011 enrollment we already have close to 50 applications and expect to admit 45 students into the program.
11)
Impact of Other Training Programs a. PassAssured Program b. Boston Reed c. Walgreens, CVS, others
Lisa McCartney, PHRA Program Department Chair
Lisa McCartney said that she has been getting phone calls from students asking about the different programs from other organizations for the pharmacy technician fields. Lisa asked if any of the members have seen certifications from other organizations. Some of the members said that they may have seen one or two, but that they are basically seeing students coming in from the ACC pharmacy program.
12)
