Reaccreditation a. Self Study report is due to NAACLS by July 2010 b. MLT faculty members will deliver packets with required forms on CDs to be filled out by affiliates in July 2009 with due dates in September. c. Terry will provide Advisory Committee Members with CE opportunities (links, literature, etc).

MLT Program Needs a. Allow ACC faculty to perform mini-clinicals at your site to familiarize themselves with current technology and get input on how we can mirror those activities on campus. b. Requests for unusual patient samples for student laboratory c. Donation of outdated reagents – Please post handout d. Donation of in-date supplies – e. Materials for case studies – Please post handout • Assistance with recruiting – Send us your ‘Potential Students’.

Advisory Committee Needs a.Number of openings for MLTs & PHBs – is ACC meeting the needs? If not, what can be done to enhance recruitment? b.Weaknesses of graduates? Is there a consistent weakness among new graduates? c.Strengths – what are the graduates doing competently or exceptionally well at entry-level?

Recruitment – Now called “Information Session” a. Direct potential students to http://www.austincc.edu/health/ b. MLT and PHB Information Session are now online.

Enhanced Certificate in Molecular Diagnostics – update The Molecular Diagnostics Certificate program is an exciting new program at Austin Community College. If you are an MT/CLS, MLT/CLT or an individual with an appropriate degree you are eligible to enroll in this program. Some individuals may wish to only take the Fundamentals course, others may wish to take all three courses to complete the certificate, the choice is yours. The certificate program consists of 3 courses, one offered each semester. •The first course is online and is open to any interested individual. •The second course is currently offered on campus. •The third course is a clinical practicum course.

MLT a.Graduates b.ASCP – 8 Graduates. 1 Grad has taken the exam. 5 students have yet to sign up and take the exam. c.Second Year – 13 enrolled. Graduate in August. d.First Year – 9 students definitely entering in the Fall of 2009 with 50 more potential applicants awaiting approval.

Phlebotomy a.Traditional b.Tech Prep c.ASCP – Not many ACC students go on to take this exam despite being encouraged to do so after completing the course. 7 took the exam this time with 6 of them passing.

New Equipment a. Aperio – Keri – Device that can scan slides and make it into a digital photograph. You can make “practical slides”, (Blood smears, grahm stains, wet mounts), create case studies. It is literally like looking through a microscope. Hope to purchase by the end of the year, and have it up and running by the Spring of 2009. b. Chemistry Analyzer – Small wet chemistry analyzer. Wonderful machine. Keri and Carolyn attended training to use this machine.

Please respond to Keri – kbrophym@austincc.edu Our accrediting agency requires that all MLT students have equivalent experiences. The faculty members are working so that the program is in compliance with this standard. We are also strengthening our student’s skills during on campus activities to improve critical thinking skills. The focus of the rotations is on getting the student to entry level competency in basic laboratory procedures in each department. Students should be trained in such a way as to fill entry level positions in any clinical laboratory. If all Students make it through the program we will need 13 placements in each area. The new curriculum has the advantage that instead of students being placed in departments back to back all year long we are asking for only one rotation in each department per year. The disadvantage of this chance is that we need all of our affiliates to be willing to host one student and, in the area of microbiology, we ask our larger affiliates to be willing to host two students. In the Blood Bank we are again asking for placement of students on evening shifts at our larger affiliates. Again, this request will only come once per year.

Expansion to Round Rock – campus will open Fall 2010 – Our goal is to expand enrollment. We hope to have a hybrid format of Distance Learning. (Class at one campus, DL at another).
