ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION
Presenter
ALL
Minutes
1. Amardeep asked if HB422 is being addressed.
Chris Mielke and Howard Hawhee stated that IT programmers were looking at several options. They are initially planning to use either the ACC directory or the Online course schedule as a starting point for the 3-click process required in the bill. They will report back to the committee on their progress with analysis and design.
2. Higher Education Opportunity Act Section 133 textbook info
IT is also working on complying with the new Text book law that goes into effect on July 1, 2010. The Higher Education Opportunity Act Section 133 states that students need to be able to view the estimated prices of textbooks and course materials at the time of online registration. Progress will be reported to the committee
3. Supported Browsers
Chris Mielke asked if ACC had a list of browsers and versions that are supported. What should be used for testing when deploying new web applications? Discussion followed that we have to support industry standard browsers that most of the ACC community uses. We should also support the most recent version and at least two versions back. The browsers that were mentioned are Internet Explorer; Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari for Macs. We discussed that we have to keep up with testing the latest versions as they are released.
We will discuss more at the next WAC meeting

STATUS UPDATE: Web Domain Re-structure Project
Presenter
Edward Terry
Minutes
Ed Terry announced that the initial phase of this project was to add additional hardware resources and a load balancer to the ACC home page. This was done for the first day of class and went well. Amardeep expressed concerns that changes were not communicated. Ed stated that the ability to ftp to websites was unexpected. Once realized, the issue was quickly resolved.
Amardeep asked if secure ftp such as wsftp or ssh could be used. Ed Terry stated that any product can be used as long as it converts properly.
PHASE II: IT will add additional hardware with a load balancer for Online Services. Once this is completed, we will have all 3 major sites optimized for heavy usage: Main ACC webpage, Online Services, and Blackboard.
Phase II – Work has begun
PHASE III: In an effort to clean up old and outdated websites and content on the www server here at ACC, the Web Advisory Committee has asked all website content managers to assist us with this process. Submitting your website to this list will allow ACC System and Web Administrators to determine which websites can be left unchanged, moved to their new locations under new ACC sub-domains, or removed from the www server. Please submit the form for all of the websites that you maintain: http://www.austincc.edu/webdev/inventory
If you have trouble classifying your websites contact the web team at webteam@austincc.edu.
Phase III: All ACC web content owners will be contacted to submit their website information via the survey.
Mary Parker asked about solutions for formmail.pl script upgrades and also requested access to webform processes that would allow direct updating to databases.
Ed is aware of these needs and is researching solutions. He will report back to the committee at the next meeting.

NEW: Google Sites for Students
Presenter
Edward Terry
Minutes
Committee members discussed pros and cons of providing students the ability to create websites under the g.austincc.edu domain. Because of potential consequences and risks, it was decided that we would not provide this to students at this time. The new ACCMail policy does not address Google sites. ACC currently has no acceptable use guidelines for student web pages and we don’t currently know who or how to monitor guideline adherence.
