1)
Welcome and Introductions. Purpose & Goals and Review May 2, 2012 Minutes
James Mulhall
Mr. Mulhall went over the last’s year Minutes, items discussed and items ACC changed. ACC have added 3Phase and soldering into their curriculum.
2)
Industry recommendations to ACC
James Mulhall and Dr. Quinonez
a. Alignment of curriculum with industry needs- Response from industry to ACC: NI- Students should be able to use statistical process control tool, pareto diagrams, statistical information such as standard deviation, and how to troubleshoot 3M- Students need to learn Six Sigma processes, training quality standards, Certified ISO, Green Belt, Black Belt, ISO 9000, operating procedures, and assess conformance and non-conformance products. MC Consultant- Students need to be train in process control Samsung- Students should be able to use Excel, to communicate data, to do technical writing, to make presentations, to speak technical dialogues, to create process maps for SOP structures Tokyo- Students need to learn quality management, business process, quality assurance, Excel, Pivot charts, Spice, CAD, PLC, Intel- Students need to be able to speak and write in technical terms effectively and explain issues and concepts to others Spansion- Suggests students doing presentations throughout the semester and a business/outsider provide critique, and do video presentations b. Other suggestions from industry were: Incorporate a final assessment into the capstone project before student graduates from college. Teach and apply Kirkpatrick theories and learning effectiveness into the final project. Give them a group project/project portfolio and benchmarking for each semester to assess progress Use the SPC approach for problem solving and it is a web base training that industry can provide assistance or donate it to the classes since industry views in a new candidate logical thinking, problem solving, and flowcharting. Another thought was to keep records after the person gets hired and follow up through the alumni website CE offered training for current technicians and work with the credit side to give partial credit Ex. ACC has been given partial credit to military training/courses that come through the Hero’s Program A suggestion was made to create stackable credentials with modular approach. Industry gives more credit to an AAS degree than to a Certificate. Hiring starts at 2 year college level. Certificate must be relevant to the business-3M needs soldering specialty and will be sending the level needed for hiring to Cecilia A discussion about quality and workmanship was made and that it was essential to learn c. Review the needs for the Bioinstrumentation and Networking/Computer Electronics Degree Plans. A discussion on removing bioinstrumentation and networking/computer electronics degree plans was open. Dr. Quinonez stated that these two degree plans are carried by other departments and that our department has only few courses from our side. He is asking industry to think about if there is a need of them or if they can be removed. Another conversation went onto adding Wireless Communications course and combine it with Industrial Robotics course and add fabrication and hand tools skills into the course.
3)
Survey and tracking system .
James Mulhall and Keith Glass
ACC will be sending out a survey on all the recommendations made to confirm actions. In addition, another skills survey will go out as well.
