Cassandra Knoblauch has retired – change program from History of Theatre to a more performance and production based program. Marcus McQuirter, department chair will lead program based on Acting III course. Looking at collaborating with Hackney Community College—whom we should be completing an MOU with. Looking at working with Hackney for Culinary Arts program. If not London, culinary arts may be Barbados.
Jan Emberson is our faculty leader for Spanish II in Argentina, going to Buenos Aires in the beginning of November, another site visit courtesy of CEA Global Education.
Working on Italy Art History and Italy Drawing – the institutional partner that we had worked with previously, Palazzi Association for International Education, we will no longer be working with, based on a variety of things that happened this summer. This is a mutual agreement.
Japan program, we have submitted a grant application to the Japan Foundation, provides grant money to fund study abroad programs to Japan will pay up to $2000 per student and faculty leader to offset costs, as well as up to $2000 to pay for honorarium for Japanese guest lecturers. Status of grant is submitted and we should find out about the award by the beginning of December. We developed program around the framework, it will be 29 days in Japan, and so it is within the required number of days for the Gilman Scholarship. So that program along with Jordan, Spanish IV and the two Italy programs all qualify, at least for the length of time within the program country requirement, so students who are receiving the Pell Grant will be able to apply for that scholarship.
Our first ACC student to receive a Gilman Scholarship was in 2012 and she is just finishing up a full year in China, studying Chinese.
Cathy Angell asked did you receive a proposal for the French program?
William Hayden responded I believe one is being worked on; I will follow up with Michael.
Last month we announced a call for proposals for the next cycle 2015 – 2017. Meetings with faculty who are interested in preparing a proposal.
We had 6 programs launch for summer of 2013 for a total of 67 students, so I hope we have an even larger number of programs for summer 2014.
Summer 2014 we are working with one external provider, SOL Education Abroad, Austin based company only works in 4 countries, Mexico, Argentina, Costa Rica and Spain. Spanish II in Argentina, Spanish IV in Spain and the relocated Anthropology program in Mexico.
Only a small number where we are using a mandatory group flight.
• Costa Rica
• Jordan
• Japan
• Barbados
International Programs in collaboration with the Art department is establishing a memorial scholarship for Mylena Chavez a student who participated in the Art History program last summer who was killed a month ago. The scholarship will be $2500 and available to any student who has applied and been accepted into any Art department program.
Cathy Angell commented I would like to talk to you about developing a scholarship for the foreign language department.
International Recruiting
ACC is launching is first international recruiting trip in collaboration with the International Students Office. One person from each office, Maite Whiting and Grace Yates, will be traveling to Columbia the first week of November, to join a Study Texas, international recruiting mission, Study Texas is a non-profit that was establish a couple of years ago to promote Texas higher education abroad. We became a member this year. Jointly sponsored by Education USA and Study Texas. Participating with several other higher education institutions, and we are the only Community College present, the rest are 4 year universities. Attending education affairs and high school visits.
We would like to do 4 International Recruiting missions this academic year. Strong focus on Latin American and the Caribbean region. Makes sense because of our regional relationship with Latin America and the Caribbean. If we can recruit 3 students to submit applications, we will cover the costs of the trip. This is the first mission of its kind in ACC 40 year history.

Description
ESOL Accreditation
Presenter
Carol Duss and Mary Corredor
Minutes
• Current ESL program does a good job of serving resident immigrants that live in the Austin areas.
• Have been receiving inquiries for many years from the Saudis government and other government entities asking if we can issue an I-20 visa for intensive English study.
• Intensive English programs have strict regulations
o Must be in English class for 20 hours per week, in block time.
• Received word that we can set up an Intensive English program and can seek accreditation.
• Big benefit to ACC, especially if we have recruiting fairs, because many will want intensive English instruction.
• Even if you don’t have Intensive English program, you have to supplement the students’ education with developmental courses that has to be a declared bridge major or be accredited.
• Don’t have choice, ACC must seek accreditation.
• I-17, any instructional site that offers 50% or more of a degree.
William Hayden asked what are the benefits of this?
Carol Duss responded:
1. Increase our international student enrollment, we have 400 international students.
2. Since we are a high tech area, we have a lot of foreign nationals that are employed at Dell, Samsung etc., that take classes here.
3. Ability to cash in on Saudis sending 5,000 students over here, as well as Jordan students.
4. Intensive English can charge more tuition than regular ACC tuition.
William Hayden commented if we doubled the amount of international students here it would be a huge benefit to the institution.

Faculty Professional Development
Presenter
Amber Luttig-Buonodono
Minutes
• Professional development course that we could offer to faculty the week before the fall and spring semester.
• Presentation about existing programs – to encourage professors to talk about programs in classes.
• Explain how to develop new courses and go through the application process.
William Hayden commented that we have a new faculty development that is being established. It would be easy enough for IP to do an hour presentation.
David Albert commented it strikes me that there are so many things going on at ACC and at so many different campuses—it is hard for the faculty and students to know about them.
Cathy Angell commented I think that is a great idea.
David Albert asked does any thing go out to students, a campus wide email?
William Hayden responded that yes, we have print, digital, information tables.
David Albert commented that it might be useful to do a five-minute presentation at faculty meetings.
William Hayden responded that the International Programs website is loaded with information for faculty and students.
Actions: Discuss possibility of professional development workshop related to specifically to educating about international programs further.
