Status of MRI Program, Fall 2009

Found a couple of people who were going to update the material for MRI and then it must pass the Review Board for curriculum. It will be 2 semesters long with instruction from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm 2 nights a week. There will also be 2 semesters of clinical - Monday, Wednesday, Friday. These classes must be staffed by MRI credentialed people.

It was suggested that the students learn about good customer service, i.e. always have a smile, take the time to get to know the patient and be helpful. Mary Wagner stated the students learn this prior to going out on clinicals.

There are currently 26 students in the 2nd year class. Rudy Garza and Nicole Bovee discussed what they are studying now. Main focus is on the credentialing exam, their competencies - didactic and clinical. There are 36 students in the 1st year program. These students will have 16 hours of clinical - image analysis.

Jane Dugan discussed the process of applying to the Radiology Program starting at becoming a student and all the steps to being admitted to the applicant pool. Jane also discussed the formula used to rank the students and choose the next class. The Radiology Department received a generous grant and was able to acquire some new equipment: rad processing portable and a C-arm machine for surgery.

Round Rock Campus and Radiology Labs

There are 3 units to be installed. They are trying to mimic the Eastview Campus. The campus should open in fall 2010 and we are anticipating having 20 students to start with. Three new faculty members will be needed. We have 2 interviews next week for new faculty and the MRI program. Rudy said they are waiting for the Coordinating Board to approve the Radiology Program at the new Round Rock campus. it has to be determined if the new site needs to be called a new program or call it an extension of the Eastview campus program. We might need to reduce the number of students at the Eastview campus. New faculty will now need to have a BS degree.

Rudy asked the members if they anticipated any work available in the near future. They all had a discussion about the economy and job availability. It is very tight now, but there should be job openings. Several of the members offered to let the ACC Radiology Program use their facility as a clinical site as well as a site for MRI clinical.
