Lisa McCartney, Department Chair for the Pharmacy Technician program, opened the discussion for members to share updates and information regarding their sites. Lisa McCartney shared that in trying to place students in nursing homes she was finding it a challenge. She stated that there is not enough space available. Philip Johnston said that high school students are getting a broad view of the hospital setting when they visit and are finding that they want to be in some health profession. Reneé Acosta stated that at UT Austin, students in the pharmacy program shadow 2-3 hours. She said she also is scrambling to find placement for her students.

Lisa McCartney presented the Financial Relationship Disclosure Statement to the members of the board. She stated that all members must sign the disclosure form to show if the members have influence content for providerships. The members signed the form. Lisa McCartney reported that she had 20 students take the Instructor’s Course. Veronica Velasquez taught the PHRA 1091, the hands on course. Lisa McCartney also announced that she plans to have a SCAT courses in October 2013. Lisa McCartney said she is still working on the CE side. She expects a lot of additional interest in the weekend IV certification course once we start advertising. She plans to have to more course offerings in 2013. Reneé Acosta announced kudos for an ACC student. She said that only the ACC student tested out of her IV class.

Lisa McCartney opened discussion for having an AAS degree option in the PHRA program. Lisa McCartney stated that PTCB is moving to requiring the degree by 2020. Eileen Klein, Dean of Health Sciences, said that it is important to remember when presenting the degree option to the College Board of Trustees that the employers also state why asking for AAS degree and if there is higher pay available for AAS degreed students. Eileen Klein also stated that once the degree plan is in place you must also be able to show completers. Eileen Klein stated that the drawback could end up being not having enough completers. Renee Acosta stated that if you look at the national figures, most students finish the AAS degree. Lisa McCartney presented the WECM list for all PHRA Rubic numbers and the AAS Pharmacy Technology Degree Option-Proposed Program Progression. Sandra Elizondo, ACC Counselor, asked why there were two speech courses. She advised that SPCH 1311 be dropped and to keep SPCH 1321. She also suggested that only one computer course be offered. She said to drop COSC 1301 and keep BCIS 1305. Lisa McCartney will take recommendations under consideration and will also go and look at other institution’s degrees with the same AAS degree.

Macy Moreno, Administrative Assistant to the Pharmacy Technician program, presented current enrollment. There are currently 77 students in the program. Fifteen students are graduating in spring 2013 and 13 graduating summer 2013. For the fall 2013 semester, 17 applicants have been received.

Lisa McCartney presented the PTCB certification changes starting in 2014 and continuing through 2020. These new changes will advance pharmacy technician qualifications by elevating PTCB’s standards for certification and recertification. Lisa McCartney will keep the board informed as changes happen.

Lisa McCartney announced that there is now a robotic pharmacy on You Tube. UCSF Medical Center has opened a new automated hospital pharmacy believed to be the nation's most comprehensive facility using robotic technology and electronics to prepare and track medications with the goal of improving patient safety. Not a single error has occurred in the 350,000 doses of medication prepared during the system's recent phase implementation.
