Jane opened the meeting with a welcome to everyone. She also thanked them for attending the summer meeting that was outside of the normal meeting time that is typically held during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Delete nine credit hours from each of the three AAS degree plans

Jane explained to the members that due to recent law changes, the Texas community college system is required to reduce all degree plans to a maximum and minimum of 60 credit hours. Office Administration has three degree plans that will be affected by the new law. Jane has made the following recommendations for each of the degree plans and asked the members for their input and approval on the changes. a. Administrative Assistant Specialization Recommendations i. Reduce POFI 1449 Excel to 3 credit hours ii. Reduce POFT 1449 Office Procedures II to 3 credit hrs (replaced by POFI 1441 Integrated Apps at the November 2013 meeting) iii. Delete POFT 1313 (the new) Management II iv. Delete ACNT 1403 Intro to Accounting I The members looked over the degree plan and discussed the proposed changes. A vote was taken and the board unanimously agreed to delete Accounting ACNT 1403 and Office Management II POFT 1313. They also voted in favor of reducing Excel POFI 1449 and Office Procedures II POFT 1449 to 3 credit hours. POFI 1441 (POFT 1449) will be reduced to 3 credit hours and become a local needs course because POFI 1341 rubric is already being used for a Web Design course in the Office Administration curricula. The changes will reflect the 60 credit hour mandate for this AAS degree. b. Legal Administrative Assistant Specialization Recommendations i. Reduce POFI 1449 Excel to 3 credit hours ii. Reduce POFT 1449 Office Procedures II to 3 credit hrs (replaced by POFI 1441 Integrated Apps at the November 2013 meeting) iii. Delete POFT 1313 (the new) Management II iv. Delete BUSI 2301 Business Law I v. Reduce POFT 2386 Internship to 2 credit hours and change rubric to POFL 2286 The members looked over the degree plan and discussed the proposed changes. Jane explained that she recommended deleting BUSI 2301 Business Law because students have reported that some of the materials in BUSI 2301and LGLA 1311 overlap. She also explained that the reduction in credit hours for POFT 2386 Internship shouldn’t have a negative impact on the students working experience because the stipulations in WECM include a range of hours to choose from so we can decide on what the required number of hours will be. After deliberating on the degree plan, the members voted and unanimously agreed that POFT 2386 Internship will be reduced to 2 credit hours (POFL 2286) with the requirement of 160 internship hours. Now that WECM includes a specialized legal internship course, the committee voted to replace POFT 2386 with POFL 2286.The group also unanimously voted to delete BUSI 2301 and POFT 1313 from the degree plan. POFI 1441 will be reduced to 3 credit hours and become a local needs course because the POFI 1341 rubric is already being used for a Web Design course in the Office Administration curricula. POFI 1449 will be reduced to a 3 credit hour course. The changes will reflect the 60 credit hour requirement for this AAS degree. c. Medical Administrative Assistant Specialization Recommendations i. Reduce POFI 1449 Excel to 3 credit hours ii. Delete POFT 1313 (the new) Management II iii. Delete POFI 2350 Access (typically the database program in medical office is customized) iv. Delete POFT 2203 Speed and Accuracy The members evaluated the proposed changes against the current degree plan for the Medical Administrative Assistant Specialization and discussed the importance for students in this field to have knowledge of medical terms. The group recommended changing HPRS 1206 Essentials of Medical Terminology to HITT 1305 Medical Terminology. They also recommended keeping POFT 2203 Speed and Accuracy, but to delete ITSW 1310 PowerPoint. The committee unanimously voted that in order to meet the new 60 credit hour requirement, they would need to delete POFT 1313 Office Management II and POFI 2350 Access. The committee also voted to increase the need for medical terminology to 3 credit hours by deleting HPRS 1206 Essentials of Medical Terminology and adding HITT 1305 Medical Terminology as well as to reduce the Excel requirement by expiring POFI 1449 and adding POFI 1349. All changes were voted on and unanimously agreed to move forward with the modifications discussed.
