Action Item-Course Caps
Presenter
Ina Midkiff
Minutes
At the last Curriculum Committee I attended I was asked for specific information about what other departments in other schools have their course caps at. I contacted the schools where Real Estate is offered and here’s what they said Of course our school keeps the limit of the various workforce courses at a level where the instructors can give the individual attention that the students need to get through this curriculum. Doesn't ACC do that?"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" We can’t afford to turn out people without appropriate habits of thought and competence and we do that with individual attention. Administration needs to rethink increasing the course caps to 36 from 25; the consequences to the program are devastating. Requiring 18 students for a class to make is not in the best interests of workforce programs and the Administration needs to realize this is a complicated issue and be willing to look at different solutions. This change was implemented fall of 2011 and we still have not been able to change the course caps back to a reasonable number. To not address these issues will is beginning to have devastating results for the Real Estate program. Our Advisory Committee had this to say about increased course caps, “it is folly to think that increasing the number of students in a class from 25 to 36 will increase the quality of education and improve student success rates”. Real Estate seems to be particularly hard hit. No one wants all our classes to make more than we do. We understand your frustration about canceling classes but the numbers have been down college-wide. If you look at Spring enrollments you will see the numbers are beginning to improve. We really want you to “like” us and we want to encourage all Advisory Members and Faculty to “like” us and follow us on Facebook. Facebook pages for Real Estate and Finance https://www.facebook.com/RELEatACC Facebook pages for Marketing and Fashion https://www.facebook.com/MRKGatACC In the fall the URL will become https://www.facebook.com/MKTatACC The Real Estate webpage is in the process of being completely revamped and I think it will be much better. It will have the same look and feel as the Marketing page. We have Facebook and Twitter and the student feedback has been very positive. http://releatacc.com/ Internal Web page for the Department: Our internal web page is located at http://www.austincc.edu/fima/internal and we update the page frequently with assessment results, program reviews and any report we are required to complete. This is a change in URL so be sure to bookmark it. Free Exam Prep Texas Real Estate Exam Prep is provided at no cost to those ACC Real Estate students who are preparing to take the state-mandated exam to become Real Estate Licensees in Texas. It is not an official or TREC sanctioned testing mechanism but is meant to significantly increase your preparedness for taking the Proctored Exam given by PSI (Psychological Services, Inc.) in Texas. This course covers both the state and the national portion of the exam. In order for this testing module to be truly effective you should have completed pre-license educational coursework. Using the test/review process to determine areas of weakness and build a foundation of knowledge, this course includes four separate practice exams. Like the official exam that you will take to gain your license, these exams are comprised of questions dealing with issues applicable nationwide, and with Texas-specific issues. To help you retain the information presented here, these subject areas are presented separately and all questions have feedback to explain the correct answer. Fall dates will be posted soon. New Real Estate Club We have some great news! The Real Estate Department has a new Student Real Estate Club. It is sponsored by James Crane and he can be reached at jcrane@austincc.edu. Everyone is welcome at the meetings. Fall meeting dates will be posted soon. Graduation completers: We need more completers. Please encourage all students to work towards at least a certificate. If you are teaching an advanced class or the last class needed for certification please give the students the information needed. I will say it again we need more completers.
