Instructional Program Review: Lynn Beaman reported that this internal review process has been completed. Copies are available upon request. An Action Plan for the department was developed for the next 4 years and includes marketing, use of technology in the classroom, and expanding job opportunities for graduates. Marketing Plan Update: Human Services (HSR) faculty have not yet had the opportunity to visit high schools to promote programs, but hope to soon. Agencies (e.g. the VA and TRC) need to be more informed about ACC’s HSR programs. Other marketing approaches Board members suggested include attendance at Health Fairs, socials and ads in the Greensheet, Recovery Today, and TRAPS magazine. Providing campus Advisors with an information sheet to assist with advising prospective students has expanded internal marketing. An ACC Human Services website is anticipated for Spring of 2002. It will provide links to other websites to better assist all interested students.

Expanding our Job Market: Lynn Beaman reported that an internship has been developed with Protective and Regulatory Services this fall. One student has been hired from that internship. The Board suggested reviewing state websites for positions Human Services’ students qualify for and providing graduates with a list. Distance Learning: Currently, Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation (RECT-1301) and Therapeutic Recreation Leadership I (RECT-1341) are being offered through this mode (i.e. computer-based). Fieldwork is required and must be approved by the Instructor. Participants are normally Activity Directors who are required to fulfill six hours in Therapeutic Recreation in order to be re-certified. The Board advised that no degree plans be offered on-line at this time. It was suggested that we begin to expand course offerings. Almost all of the courses were thought to be “do-able” on-line with creativity – especially the entry-level courses. The Board offered suggestions e.g. video-conferencing, chat rooms, interactive assignments and weekend in-class times as ways to enhance interactions with students and the teacher.
