Discussion: Final International Programs Advisory Committee 1. Shared Governance Committee reviewed the Shared Governance Council and Committees and made a recommendation to eliminate IPAC as a Shared Governance Committee, since IPAC does not do any shared governance work. 2. IP will put together working groups as needed, if there are special areas we want to develop or issues that need to be tackled. a. That way, it will be a group that is interested and engaged and wants to make a contribution. b. No need to take up peoples' time that are not interested. 3. In terms of information sharing, IP plans to move to a newsletter format, in order to keep everyone abreast of developments. Summer 2014 Study Abroad Programs Update 1. Only 3 programs our of 15 on offer executed. 2. 31 students total a. 23 females to 8 males b. Demographics by ethnicity skewed toward white participants, which seems to be national trend. c. Hispanic participation has been averaging around 30%, which is pretty good. Other International Programs Initiatives Update 1. Hosted 3 programs with our Danish partners for the 2013-2014 Academic Year. 2. 2 with Aarhus Business College (AABC) and 1 with Business Academy Aarhus (BAA) which is the sister school of AABC. 3. 3rd program with AABC scheduled for November 2014. 4. Joint summer school program with BAA a. Intense 2 week, 40 hours per week b. Co-taught by 2 ACC faculty: Michelle Fitzpatrick and Jill Brockman and 2 BAA faculty. c. Focused on Social Media and Marketing for the Hospitality, Travel, Tourism, and Event Planning industries. d. Included elements of the Millennial Mentoring Program launched with Hackney Community College (HCC). e. Included 5 ACC students and 21 BAA students who were broken up into teams for four local businesses in order to prepare a social media marketing strategy. i. Homeaway ii. The Haywood Hotel iii. The Round Rock Convention & Visitors’ Bureau iv. North by Northwest Brewery and Restaurant f. 2-day innovation camp, let by Three Day Start-Up, which helps focus on defining a realizable goal. 5. ACC has hosted 70 Danish students this academic year. 6. Three new institutional partners: a. Hackney Community College, London, England b. Aarhus Business College, Aarhus, Denmark c. Business Academy Aarhus, Aarhus, Denmark 7. Will have a videoconference in early August with BAA to discuss a joint summer school at BAA in Denmark for summer 2015. International Visiting Scholar Update 1. ACC will host our current international visiting scholar, Dr. Mehrang Monfared, for a second year. 2. She is teaching this summer at the Persian Institute at UT. 3. Asylum process still bogged down. Her initial asylum request was denied, but pro-bono attorneys have been advising on the application process. 4. Credentials are being evaluated, spear-headed by Samuel Echevarria-Cruz, so she could teach here at ACC. New Provost – Charles Cook 1. Comes from Houston Community College (HCC), which has been involved in the establishment of the community college in Qatar. 2. HCC is one of the top 10 institutions for international students coming to the United States; they have well over 5000 international students, compared to ACC that has about 500. International Student Recruitment Update 1. Planning another Study Texas recruitment mission a. November 2014 b. To Mexico – Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey c. Target high schools and technologicas 2. Colombia recruitment mission last year a. Received a lot of feedback, inquiries, and questions from persons that the group spoke to or who had obtained materials b. Institution in Colombia that is interested in exploring collaboration c. ACC is still looking for a suitable Latin American institution to partner with in addition to HCC and AABC. Other Updates: 1. IP is staying in the same location – not moving to Highland Campus a. IP is still hoping to more at some point over the course of the next academic year. b. Moving to HLC would put IP in proximity of students and walk-in foot traffic. 2. IP is working with Student Life to host Study Abroad Student Panels a. Students from this past summer or even last summer if available b. Face-to-face communication Catherine Angell asked if IP will send her information, even if it is not about foreign languages, so she can send it out on the List-serve. Roberta Weston asked for more information about the programs that were attempting to go this summer, how many of them made, and what the application numbers were. 1. IP had 200 applications 2. Germany was approved to run with only 8 students because there was no cost increase to the student a. Innovative program – faculty leader had done a lot of work developing a relationship with a small, non-profit film school in Berlin called filmArche. b. Included working on a reciprocal program to bring filmArche students and staff here to work with the RTF department during SXSW. c. Faculty health issues prevented program from going, after program was approved. d. Challenge to find a replacement because of nature of relationship between faculty and filmArche. e. Back-up faculty, Christian Raymond, could not step in because by the time decision was made he had already committed to his summer schedule. 3. IP will have considerably fewer program on offer for summer 2015 a. Plan to focus on programs that have a higher probability of making. b. Suspended Jordan program due to circumstances in the region and what is going on in Gaza, the ISIS campaign in Syria and Iraq 4. IP did a culinary arts survey towards the end of the spring semester—got a pretty good response rate. a. Three programs we are considering for summer 2015 i. Pastry Arts in France at the Ecole Nationale Superieure de Patisserie, southwest of Lyon, which is the only public institution in France that teaches the Pastry Arts. ii. Culinary Arts program in London focusing on beverage management and craft brewing. Would be in collaboration with Hackney Community College, which just launched a craft brewing apprenticeship program. iii. Culinary Arts program in Barbados focusing on Caribbean cuisine and food sustainability. 5. Programs that made: a. Spanish III in Costa Rica b. Spanish IV in Spain c. British Literature in United Kingdom 6. Mexico – Anthropology Program is being retweaked. a. Karen Bell went to Oaxaca this summer and met with SOL Education Abroad staff there. b. Going to build course around cultural anthropology working with Carol Hayman. c. Two weeks in Oaxaca with a mix of cultural anthropology and archeology d. Last week in Mexico City with an archeological focus e. During two weeks in Oaxaca, students will stay with host families f. Hoping to bring the program with group flight to about $3000 7. Argentina - Working with Jan Emberson to bring costs of program down by eliminating certain things, like the Planetarium visits and dedicated tango lesson. 8. Marketing a. One of the challenges with marketing is getting Student Life involved. b. Finally, IP has a commitment from SL to do the join, student panel sessions. c. IP & SL will host 2 student panel sessions per month, September, October, and November. d. IP will also manage 4 information tables per week e. IP hopes to utilize ACC social media and, if hiring freeze is lifted and can get additional staff, look into developing a secondary website on Wordpress. f. IP plans to create a newsletter, like the Facstaff newsletter, so we can share information on a regular basis. 9. Scholarship money - IP did not give out all of the BOT scholarship money this past year, so it will roll over to next year. 10. Examples of how study abroad contributes to student success initiatives: a. One UK participant had applied to the Ireland program for the last three years and finally decided she was going abroad no matter what, so joined with the UK program. b. One of the Spanish IV participants study abroad with the Costa Rica program last year. 11. Joint Summer School presentations a. IDS and KVUE will be filming the presentations this afternoon. b. Article on the program was in the online version of the Austin Business Journal yesterday, highlighting the local area business involvement and the international collaboration that is taking place at ACC. c. Some press coverage for the Millennial Mentoring project, mostly in London, during SXSW. d. PICM did send out a press release in advance of the Millennial Mentoring presentations during SXSW. 12. The hiring freeze and being understaffed is definitely hurting IP.
