Erlene Clark - Architectural CAD, Jeffrey Muhammad - Civil CAD Kim Duren - Mechanical CAD, Douglas Smith - Electronics CAD
Architectural CAD Subject Matter Experts Meeting: Subject Matter Experts: Andy Baxter (Page), Audrea Moyers (AISD – McCallum High School), Dan Gruber (Mell Lawrence Architects), Brett Grinkmeyer (Brett Grinkmeyer Architecture) Faculty Coordinator: Erlene Clark Meeting was called to order by Erlene Clark. Erlene briefed SME’s on changes to Architectural CAD AAS program reducing hours to 60. All members made various remarks that it was unfortunate that there are fewer courses required in the degree plan and that financial aid is not provided beyond sixty hours. Erlene showed the SME’s the AAS curriculum as it would appear in Fall 2015. Erlene presented the proposed course additions to the course catalog for AY 2015-2016 which includes nine architectural transfer (ARCH) courses from the Academic Course Guide Manual (ACGM) and one workforce (WECM) Mechanical & Electrical (MEP) course. Some of the courses will be required in the proposed degree plan, and some will serve as elective courses but will be required for transfer to university architecture programs. All members unanimously approved the course additions and degree plan changes as proposed. The following are comments from individual committee members: Andy Baxter: Mechanical engineering students are not instructed in technology the way that his office needs them to work, so he can train our graduates in what they need to be able to do. Revit Systems is what they are using since it is most widely used. He wondered if the MEP course could be transferable to a university at some point. Audrea Moyers: This program of architectural transfer courses would be great for high school students because she sees many students at McCallum (AISD) who have a desire to pursue architecture but are not quite ready for the rigor of a university architecture program. Brett Grinkmeyer: He went to a community college in Michigan (Grand Rapids), then transferred to University of Houston, so he understands the need for a pathway and partnership from community college to a university. He also recommends offering a Materials and Methods class. Dan Gruber: All agreed that 3dsMax is a fairly commonly used tool within education and for presentation, but it is not typically used for architectural production and could be phased out of the curriculum. Dan wondered whether the shift from the advanced residential course (DFTG 2400) to the architectural design course (ARCH 1403) would retain any of its BIM/Revit content. Erlene commented that this portion of the course content would shift to other DFTG courses, and ARCH 1403 would be strictly an introductory design course. **ADDENDUM TO MEETING MINUTES ON 17 FEB. 2015: Erlene sent out an email requesting approval to change a proposed new course addition from ARCH 1308: Architectural Graphics II to ARCH 2301: Architectural Freehand Drawing I. CIVIL CAD Subject Matter Experts Meeting: Subject Matter Experts: Ralph Sanchez (CAD Manager, Bury), Kristen Schmidt (Civil CAD Consultant & Contractor), Jennifer Lineberger (Civil Engineering Consultant & Contractor) Faculty Coordinator: Jeffrey Muhammad Meeting was called to order by Jeffrey Muhammad. Jeffrey briefed SME’s on changes to CIVIL CAD AAS program reducing hours to 60. Jeffrey showed the SME’s the AAS curriculum as it would appear in Fall 2015, the Civil CAD core course flow chart and listed primary software titles utilized in the Civil CAD program. Jeffrey presented the proposed curriculum changes to the descriptions for DFTG 2421 and DFTG 2430. Jeffrey presented the proposed curriculum changes to the prerequisites for DFTG 2475 and DFTG 2476. Ralph, Kristen and Jennifer complimented the Civil CAD program about the quality of A&E Civil CAD student design based curriculum and how it meets and exceeds industry expectations and that the proposed curriculum changes above will also benefit the students. Ralph, Kristen and Jennifer approved the proposal to change the descriptions for DFTG 2421 and DFTG 2430 and the proposal to change the prerequisites for DFTG 2475 and DFTG 2476. Electronics/Electrical CAD Subject Matter Experts Meeting: Subject Matter Experts (SME): Cong Do (Coherent Logic), Steven Virostko (Intel Corp) Faculty Coordinator: Douglas Smith Meeting was called to order by Douglas Smith. After brief introductions, Steven and Cong discussed how former students of the Electronic CAD program had found success in the field. Steven remarked that Intel had hired a number of ACC graduates and that they were doing very well professionally. Cong spoke of the number of recruiters that had visited ACC since August and that it appeared that at the present time, the program was not producing enough students to meet the demands of industry. Doug briefed SME’s on changes to Electronic CAD AAS program that resulted in reducing number of credit hours from 68 to 60. Both Cong and Steven both remarked that it was unfortunate the amount of training had to be reduced to meet the rules of Senate bill 497. Doug showed the SME’s the AAS curriculum as it would appear in Fall 2015. Doug presented the changes to the curriculum in Dftg 1458 that now include Orccad schematic capture tools and Allegro PCB design tools. Students are also learning the basics of circuitry by building actual circuits using kits the program has purchased. Cong remarked that the schematic capture tools of Virtuoso are also taught in the IC classes. Doug presented the proposed curriculum changes to the prerequisite for Dftg 1458, Dftg 2405 and Dftg 2413. Both Cong and Steven approved the proposal to change the prerequisite for these three courses from “Dftg 1405” to “Dftg 1405 or Departmental Approval”. Cong and Steven completed the departmental survey. The Subject Matter Expert break-out meeting was adjourned and the attendees went to room 3218 to attend the plenary session. Mechanical CAD Subject Matter Experts Meeting: Subject Matter Experts: Jean Wilde (Applied Research Laboratories – Mechanical Engineer/Manger), Alberto Gutierrez (National Oilwell Varco – Electrical/Mechanical Designer, past ACC graduate) Faculty Coordinator: Kim Duren Meeting was called to order by Kim Duren. Kim briefed SME’s on changes to Mechanical CAD AAS program reducing hours to 60. Substitutions for certain classes may be selected in the future according to specific areas of the discipline. Kim presented the proposed course name changes to follow WECM instead of local needs courses. All members unanimously approved the course name changes and degree plan changes as proposed. The following are comments from individual committee members: Jean Wilde: Continue teaching GDT and cable drawings to support her group. She also will offer internships in the future, as our students have more experience than beginning mechanical students at 4 years colleges. Jean offered to speak to our students on important aspects in hiring our students as well as a GPA requirement of 3.0 minimum. Alberto Gutierrez: Alberto expressed the importance of designing something from scratch and using it in interviews. Our student projects from outside inventors will help aid in the ideation/prototyping/decision process in design. He also recommended using designs in different classes to one product in the end and using it with a portfolio for reference. Alberto will continue to be a good source of info for teaching our students what is needed in the field after our degree program. Chair, Dan Gruber, asked for a motion to approve changes, motion was made and seconded. There was not discussion. Committee voted unanimously to approve proposed changes to curriculum. Meeting was adjourned.
