Meeting called to order by institutional representative, Lisa Thibodeaux, Pharmacy Technician Supervisor with SDMC Round Rock Medical Center. Philip Johnston welcomed the board members and asked them to introduce themselves. Committee members reviewed last meeting minutes from February 12, 2010. Andrew Mullins motioned to accept minutes and Elizabeth Huss second the motion. The committee members voted to accept the minutes as written.

Lisa McCartney announced that the Health Science Career Fair would take place on December 2, 2010. She asked for representatives from the board members to speak at the event about their workplace. If members are interested she asked them to email her.

Experiential training site updates and Hospital Standardization of Scrub Colors

Preceptor/PIC “how to guide” - Lisa McCartney said that she has been working on a “how to guide” for the preceptors and for the practicum students. She has put together an Agreement of Understanding which practicum students will have to read and sign before going out to the training sites. In addition, Lisa McCartney also has put together a “how to guide” packets for the preceptors who are working with the students in practicum. Lisa McCartney said she would be mailing out these packets. Pat Recek, Assistant Dean of ACC Health Sciences, recommended that she post them online for the preceptors in a PowerPoint format. Philip Johnston encouraged the members to become preceptors and also mentioned that the best incentive for being a preceptor is that it counts toward CE hours. Lisa McCartney also said that by being a preceptor there is an opportunity to know each other and network. Lisa McCartney asked that each preceptors review her “how to guide” and send her any remarks regarding them. b. HEB Agreement - Pat Recek announced that an affiliation agreement had been signed with HEB. This is good news since it will provide retail placement for those students in practicum. Lisa McCartney thanked Pat Recek for working on the agreement. c. Site Updates and Information Sharing- Lisa McCartney asked the board members to share updates and information regarding their training sites. Lisa Thibodeaux, from SDMC in Round Rock, reported that her site had upgraded to Pyxus and no longer will be using Accudose. Lisa McCartney asked if maybe they might want to donate the Accudose to ACC pharmacy program. Marcy May, adjunct for the PHRA program, said that her experience at the Kyle site where she is employed, she has noticed that students are not really experiencing as much as they should at the site. She stated that students should be given an opportunity to do more than just fill prescriptions. She stated that as an instructor for these pharmacy students, she would like to see the students with more hands on the computer and other pharmacy duties. Colt Harris with Scott & White stated that students need to take the initiative and be more proactive in their training. Veronica Velazquez, faculty at ACC Pharmacy program asked that students be given feedback on their work and also be encouraged to expand in their field by the supervisors. Andrew Mullin, with Seton, agreed and asked that feedback be sent to Lisa McCartney. Kim Stengel with Stonegate Pharmacy stated that they are trying to work to become future preceptors. Lisa McCartney proposed maybe having preceptors in the future come in and do live presentation for the students at ACC. She also suggested that maybe students might be able to tour the sites. Steve Self, at ACC library, stated that he would like to help the students with more support material but funds limited his search for resources. Elizabeth Huss mentioned that her CE students had stated that they were frustrated because cannot get CE classes in PHRA 1001 and 1009. There is still a registration date problem between CE and Credit students. Lisa McCartney stated that due to the number of increased enrollment in the program there have not been seats open for students who have not submitted applications to the program. Joe Rascati with Seton Hospital, NW, stated that the technician role is expanding where technician may be helping with the medication process. Finally, Laura Shields, adjunct for ACC pharmacy program, stated that she has spoken to Paul at Pharmacy Alternative and he had approved to having pharmacy students visit to just observe their operation. d. Hospital standardization of scrub colors - Lisa McCartney stated that the official scrub color s for pharmacy technician students is the color teal.

Description
Method to track completion/employment for grads

Lisa McCartney informed the board that she is currently using survey monkey, facebook, TSBP and student updates to track the completion/employment of PHRA grads. Pat Recek mentioned that it is important to ask the grads these questions when tracking:: -How long did it take to gain employment after graduating? -What was your pay? She also asked that Lisa keep track of how many students graduated and where they are now. Lisa McCartney said she has some of this information and the hardest information to track is when the student took the PTCP test and the date they were certified.

ACPE Providership Update and Nov. 16, 2010 ASHP Reaccreditation Visit Update

Lisa McCartney reported the ACPE providership is in process. Application will be submitted to ACPE by 2/1/11. Lisa McCartney announced that November 16, 2010 is the date for the ASHP Reaccreditation visit. She asked that all board members be attend the advisory board meeting at noon on that date. Lisa McCartney also asked that for future meetings that board members send alternates if they cannot attend the meetings.

Lisa McCartney presented the current enrollment numbers for the program. For Spring 2010, 32 students were accepted into the program. For Spring 2010, 17 students graduated. For the summer 2010, 13 students are graduating. We currently have 24 new applicants for the fall 2010 semester. Lisa McCartney commented that the program is continuing to grow.

Update to Practicum Student Requirements

Lisa McCartney reported that she is in the process of working and developing forms to help her track the required practicum paperwork. She stated that she is required to show how she tracks the student’s practicum paper, written exams, student self-evaluation, student exit evaluation and the PTCE testing. Bob Salzman, with UT, recommended that the forms be in writing so as to show documentation of their completion. Pat Recek, Assistant Dean, recommended that required forms could be put on blackboard for the students to fill out. Lisa Thibodeaux recommended that a group mock interview take place as part of a class assignments along with the resume as to give the students an idea of what to expect at an interview session. Lisa McCartney said she would work on the forms.

Lisa McCartney reported that NABP’s recommendation states that all people who take the PTCE should have completed an ASHP Accredited Pharmacy training program.

Lisa McCartney said she was concerned because some of her students were being offered employment prior to completing practicum. She asked that the board members with students contact her prior to offering one of ACC student.

Program Promotion on Univision

Minutes
Veronica Velasquez reported that she would be on the Spanish TV station, Univision. She said the station did an interview with her regarding opportunities in the pharmacy technician field. She was able to promote the ACC PHRA program in Spanish.
