Opening, Introductions and Welcome

Michelle welcomed all the attendees to the fall 2012 advisory board meeting and opens the floor to everyone as they went around the room and introduced themselves. Michelle also expressed her gratitude to the members for assisting with the programs throughout the year.

Program Updates

Michelle updated the board on the faculty changes that took place throughout the year. Stacey Alexander is the new full-time faculty member and began teaching with the college as an adjunct several years ago. Michelle also asked the member to send any qualified referrals to the ACC website to apply for an adjunct position for the meeting and event planning program. Michelle also commended her faculty on being involved in program specific entities outside of the college. Program Update – Enrollment Discussion: Michelle reported the successful enrollment for all three programs this fall. Each course offered in fall 2012 made and enrollment increased by 35 students. Currently, all three programs have 365 students. Program Update – Course change update Discussion: Michelle shared with the board that the advance topics course Sustainable Tourism that was approved last year has been changed to a required course. The launch of the course in spring 2012 was a success and it will be offered again in spring 2013. Program Update – IPR Discussion: Michelle reported that an IPR was completed for the Meeting and Event Planning program and upon completion; she submitted proposals to the college detailing data that showed what the program needed to be successful in its effort to improve and meet industry standards. In doing so, she was approved for a grant that will provide 23 IPads and applications.

Technologies in the Classroom

Michelle shared with the board that the program will roll out Sales and Catering Pro and Hotel Service Pro in the spring. This is software that is commonly used in the hotel, event planning and catering industries. The program is currently using property management software. We are still researching an effective and efficient point of sale system for the students to train on and to substitute the absence of the software; students are taken to POS solutions and trained on a management system.

Study Abroad

The summer of 2013 will provide the opportunity for students to participate in the study abroad program and travel to Barbados. The academic collaboration is with the University of West Indies – Cave Hill and Barbados Community College. Students enrolled in the program will receive credit for TRVM 2345 Advanced Topics in Travel and Tourism and HAMG 1317 Recreational Services. The course will run July 8 through August 13th and the course related activities in Barbados will run July 28th through August 11th. 2013. Handouts were provided to all attendees.

Curriculum Changes

Michelle opened the discussion with the changes she would like to put forward to the board. She also explained that the changes to the degree and certificate programs will create a more applicable program of study and will ultimately assist the student in achieving the foundation they need to work in the industry. Michelle presented the change of adding HAMG 2301 Principles of Food and Beverage operations to all of the Hospitality and Meeting and Event Planning degree and certificate programs to the curriculum committee and it was approved. She is now asking for the board to approve the following changes: Hospitality Management Certificate Semester I: Add the option for the students to take HAMG 1342 Guest Management or RSTO 1304 Dining Room Management. Semester II: Remove HAMG 2305 Hospitality Management and Leadership and Add HAMG 1324 Hospitality Human Resource Management Remove Chef 1301 Basic Food Preparation and add option for students to take HAMG 2301 Principles of Food and Beverage Operations or HAMG 1313 Front Office Procedures Footnote will also be replaced to add restrictive electives: CHEF 1301, PSTR 1301, HAMG 2305, HAMG 1300, HAMG 1391, HAMG 2307, TRVM 2301, HAMG 1317, HAMG 2389, RSTO 1325, TRVM 1391, TRVM 2372, RSTO 1301, RSTO 1319 Hotel and Restaurant Specialization Degree Semester III: Remove restricted elective and add HAMG 2301 Principles of Food and Beverage Operations. Michelle will move forward with presenting the changes to the curriculum committee for final approval. Members ended the discussion on degree changes with suggestions on trend topics and association memberships. Advisory Board members discussed the importance of the 3 programs being involved in additional local associations such as DMAI, HSMAI, IAPA, SKAL, MPI and more.
