Mental Health Counseling
Presenter
Minutes
Discussion about the shift in mental health counseling; curriculum needs to continue to address changes. Funding is limited and the criminal justice area is winning treatment in many incarceration models. Discussion was held on ‘treatment’ in the industry and its move to social work and generic areas.
3)
Description
LCDC
Presenter
Minutes
St. Edward’s University has changed their scheduling to address the need of LCDC adult classes for students coming back to school. Future LCDCs w/o a B.A. or Masters will most likely be considered a ‘tech’ person. Ex-prisoners getting into the program bring good experience and intentions, but lack the education. TASP is also a deterrent.
4)
Description
Credit vs. Non-Credit
Presenter
Minutes
Discussion was held in non-credit (continuing education) versus credit courses. Obtaining students from continuing education has been successful because the students are able to convert to credit classes. Students in credit courses are trained in social services, while continuing education students are not. Students who do not understand their clients don’t stay employed.
5)
Description
Distance-Learning Classes
Presenter
Minutes
Discussion was held on the effectiveness of distance-learning. It was reported that students don’t like it, but they like the option. Drop out rate is high; technology is making it better. V-tel classes on each campus (two-way audio and video) and Internet classes are being used. Students need personal contact, hands-on attention. Classrooms are much better.
6)
Description
Therapeutic Recreation
Presenter
Minutes
ACC has the only long distance learning Therapeutic Recreation program (two (3) hour classes) in the state allowing Activity Directors the flexibility to take these classes for their recertification. There were 15 students enrolled this fall.
7)
Description
New Business
Presenter
Minutes
ACC is governed by TECB and SAC, to meet their criteria, AAS degrees need five courses (15 transferable hours) aside from Workforce Education courses. Recommendation was unanimous to delete COSC 1301, Personal Computing and add SPE 1311, or 1315 to meet the oral communication requirement. The decision to delete unrestricted elective and add Humanities perspective (any course from approved list in catalog) to meet the Humanities requirement.
