Program Update

IBI Enrollments
The IBI program has continued to struggle with enrollments; enrollment is down college wide as well as with our program. Currently the IBI program has about a hundred students enrolled with our peak enrollment back in 2011 with 300 students. One highlight however is our overall completion rate. Our program stands at an impressive 80% completion rate, higher than most ACC college programs. We believe several things have contributed to our decline in enrollment:
• College budget cuts resulting in higher class limits
• The rebound of the economy
As a result, Bill approached the curriculum committee back in March to request our class limits be reduced to 12 students per class. This would equate to a minimum of 9 students in order for our classes to make. We are pleased to announce our request was granted. This will make it much easier for our classes to make. In addition, we have moved all our classes beginning fall of 2014 to the new, much central location of the Highland Learning Center. Most IBI courses will continue to be offered via classroom vs. distance learning with the exception of the summer semester. We have found that our classes are most successful when offered in the classroom. However during the summer our students prefer to keep a more relaxed schedule, therefore we offer only distance learning course during the summer. We are hopeful these changes will increase enrollment.

Student Demographics
Approximately 50% of our student body is foreign born. Most already have degrees from other countries and come to the U.S. to get an AAS to complement their existing degrees. One of the questions asked, does the IBI keep track of employment results of our graduates? Bill is studying the career paths our students choose and hopes to have some results before our next Advisory Committee Meeting. Bill asked the committee what type of skills their companies look for in our graduates. If we knew this information, it would help us better prepare are students for the workforce. Recently Bill participated on a committee with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to determine what global perspectives a business/international business student should have upon graduating. Most of what we’ve learned is that most businesses want graduates with a bachelor’s degree. Therefore our challenge is how can we prepare our students to enter a completive marketplace with only an AAS
Action
Bill will continue to research career paths for our students
IBIAC members will help provide feedback as to what companies are looking for in our graduates
Discussion
IBI Marketing Efforts
The IBI continues to attend area high school recruitments fairs with the goal of bringing new students into the program. Additionally Regina mailed out program information to all area high schools and we continue to enter into articulation agreements with area schools. Once a year we send information regarding our program to the ACC advisors. A question was asked, could we offer IBI classes on site at area high schools by working with other programs such as culinary arts?
Action
The IBI will continue its marketing efforts and look into working with other business studies programs to offer onsite classes at area high schools
Discussion
Student Internships
The International Business Institute is looking for internship opportunities, Regina asked the committee to let her or Bill know of any opportunities at their organizations or any other companies they may aware of
Action
All IBIAC Members will advise Bill or Regina of any internship opportunities

IBI Recent Seminars and Conferences
The IBI coordinates with a number local International organizations to offer seminars and conferences. Most recent events include:
• Texas EU Business Summit
• Texas Global Summit
The IBI benefits not only financially from these events, but is highly recognized for our outreach in the International business community. As a result, the IBI will continue to host international business events. This fall the IBI will be partnering with the U.S. Department of Commerce to offer Bureau of Industry and Security’s Essentials for U.S. Export Controls and Technology Controls as well as Applied Materials, U.S. Department of Commerce and ATMI of offer the 3rd annual Trade Compliance “What your peers are really doing” All proceeds from these events go back into our revenue account and are mainly used toward student scholarships and faculty travel.
It was suggested that we use an outside contractor to help with the coordination of these events. We currently use IBI students to assist us with our events. In addition, the Hospitality and Tourism Department at ACC has offered to assist the IBI. This will help provide their students with first-hand experience while assisting us with some of the planning aspects that accompany these type events.
Action
Regina will work with the Hospitality and Tourism Department in future to the mutual benefit of both ACC departments.

60 Hour Rule/New Degree Plan/Marketability
William Louden
The Texas Senate passed bill 497, stating all AAS degree plans must not exceed 60 hours. As a result Bill has made a few changes to the IBI AAS degree. The proposed changes are as follows:
• The addition of BUSG 1193 Fundamentals of Financial Planning to the first semester
• The removal of MRKG 1311 in the second semester and the addition of IBUS 1300 Global Logistics Management
• The removal of the Foreign Language II elective in the fourth semester.
Bill asked the committee review/compare the proposed plan along with the Workforce Educational Course Manual (WECM) course offerings and make any suggestions or recommendations at our next IBIAC meeting in the Fall. The new plan must be approved by both the International Business Institute Advisory Committee and the Curriculum Committee before it appears in the 2015-2015 college catalog. In addition, Bill is looking for suggestions on how we can make our students more marketable with a two year degree. The following ideas were suggested:
• Other degree tracts, such as an International Marketing or Global Supply Management. Bill has been exploring this idea for some time, but has not come up with a plan that would allow our current classes/degree to successfully coincide with each other.
• Different course offerings to help prepare students for the workforce or self-employment such as an entrepreneur course.
• Contacting the Austin Chamber to inquire about recruiting several area large and small international businesses to meet with the IBI in order to gain insight into what they are looking for in a potential employees
• Determining the skill set needed to obtain jobs in the international field, Bill supplied the committee with a hand out on global perspectives; what areas of competencies graduates should have out of high school and college. Bill asked the committee to make suggestions on what they feel are important skills for IBI graduates to have whn entering the job market.
Action
All IBIAC Members will review the proposed IBI AAS plan, and graduate skill areas and make any suggestions at the next IBIAC meeting in the fall. Bill will continue to review other program tracts, look into contacting the Austin Chamber and continue to research international business job postings to determine skills sets in demand.
