Description
3. ESOL (Farrah Keeler) ; AR 4.04.021
Screening Procedures
Presenter
Yolanda Chapa
Minutes
1. Farrah presented proposed procedures for screening ESOL students and referring to take the ESOL test prior to the TSI test. Committee members discussed the pros and cons on when students should be advised to take the ESOL test. The ESOL department recommends that the ESOL students take the test prior to TSI. Because the TSI test is required and must be taken regardless of ESOL testing, Connie Park recommended that the TSI test be taken first w/Caryn supporting the recommendation. The Committee accepted that new students will should be taking TSI first. Counselors will advise students individually (If they did not achieve the TSI required cut scores and answered yes to the ESOL demographic questions. ) and refer them to take the ESOL Assessment. The placement scores to use as criteria) will be provided by the ESOL Dept.
2. Members discussed how students would be screened using objective criteria. The recommendation would be to screen them at the student services frontline centers. Also, revise the online enrollment steps and include a statement of ESOL testing as option to the TSI test for ESOL students.
3. An additional method for screening ESOL students can be after the student takes the TSI. There would be additional demographic questions added to identify the students. The ESOL demographic question and the TSI developmental scores would be objective indicators for the counselor to use for referring the student to the ESOL test. The counselor would not advise the students into courses until after the ESOL test.
4. The Reading/Writing/ESOL departments will schedule a separate meeting to work on procedures for creating a seamless process of doing level changes from the developmental courses to the ESOL courses.
5. Recommendation was made for ESOL to create 14 week courses so that department level changes could be made and students could still enroll into the correct courses.
Decision
/Actions: 1. Because it is difficult to determine screening criteria the committee did not support the front line screening procedure. The online statement was supported.
2. The committee supported the procedures on advising the students after the TSI and ESOL test have been taken.
3. Developmental departments will schedule a separate meeting to address level changes.
Follow-Up items Contact admissions to see if they could include this statement in the online enrollment steps.
Caryn and Farrah will work on scheduling departmental meeting.
