Curriculum Changes
Presenter
Carol Hamilton
Minutes
ADMISSION PROCESS
Additional requirements were proposed: (1) raise GPA from 2.0 to 2.7 and (2) use the TEAS pre-admission test. The program can set a minimum GPA but cannot set a minimum required TEAS score (violation of TSI exemptions) and keep the rolling admission process currently in place. Therefore, the TEAS test will be used as an advising tool once students are admitted to the program to identify any problem academic areas that may impact success in the program.
Retention has dropped in the past few years with withdrawals usually occurring in the first semester. Philosophically want to give chance to all students but need a mechanism to aid in assisting the students to be successful.
MOTION MADE & PASSED: Adopt 2.7 minimum GPA and the TEAS test requirement for all Surgical Technology applicants.
CURRICULUM CHANGES
The proposed changes to the degree plan include:
-Replace BIOL 2404 Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology (4 credits) with BIOL 2401 Anatomy & Physiology I and BIOL 2402 Anatomy & Physiology II (8 credits)
-Replace HPRS 1206 Essentials of Medical Terminology (2 credits) with HPRS 1106 (1 credit)
-Remove Speech course from the degree plan
-6 Prerequisites required for admission to the Certificate or Associate of Applied Science: A&P I, A&P II, Math, Medical Terminology, Introduction to Microbiology and Pharmacology for Health Professions
MOTION MADE & PASSED: Adopt proposed curriculum changes.
Barbara Alexius proposed the idea of “mentoring for peers” to help with retention rate. This was met with general approval.
