Curriculum Input needed
Presenter
Minutes
a. On-Site clinical. Input is needed to determine the specific skills common to all clinical laboratories to focus on during on –site clinical. Would like to set up focus groups with appropriate ACC Faculty to set curriculum and standards of practice for commonly performed tests.
b. Need input from clinical practitioners on competencies established at ACC for both on-site and off-site (in the actual Clinical laboratory) to establish entry-level practices Suggestions for additions and deletions in the documents created
c. Competency Assessment is routine in the clinical laboratory. ACC wishes to mirror these activities and need input. Which skills need to be observed? Which skills are evaluated based on results obtained with remediation and additional practice offered if the skill is failed? Which part of a competency is “essential”, resulting in a failure, versus requiring remediation but allowed to pass? How many times would a competency be failed before an employee was terminated? Requested input from members on competencies.
d. Discussion on types of body fluid samples performed at different sites.

Texas does not require certification of phlebotomists and most employers in the Austin area do not require it although some will pay a higher salary for those who are certified. The exam costs $125 which is difficult for an entry level worker to afford.
f. Concern expressed about 2 day phlebotomy classes taught in hotel rooms. Committee members stated they do not hire these individuals.
g. Proprietary schools are asking for clinical placement in phlebotomy. Committee members stated they have tried students from other phlebotomy programs and now only consider ACC phlebotomy students for placement.
