Presenter
Keri Brophy-Martinez
Minutes
Keri opened by welcoming everyone to the Eastview Campus.
For those of you that are new to the process we have our advisory board meeting annually. With our programs, we tend to have them in January. We have experimented with all different times of the year and this is a good time for us because we do not have students right now our students start next week.
The advisory committee meeting serves as a way to discuss the program, curriculum, and invest in our student’s success. Keri introduced herself and then went around the table.

MLT Site Evaluations
Presenter
Keri Brophy-Martinez
Minutes
For each rotation that the student goes on they have to fill out an evaluation, it is mandatory. We pull information from every site that they are going to. If I see, anything alarming the site will hear from Keri personally.
For site evaluations across the board, here are the good responses that we received:
Mentors were knowledgeable and supportive
Mentors answered questions
They were exposed to a variety of equipment
Students generally graded their knowledge & skills as average pre-rotation. Onsite clinical are helping with student readiness.
Students graded their knowledge & skills as excellent post-rotation.
The following are the bad responses that we received:
Students sited the three day rotation for Micro & Blood Bank is too short.
Some sites also stated the three day rotation is too short.
Some sites using IRIS, harder to achieve competency in Urinalysis Microscopy.
At some sites, techs were too busy to work with the students.

Phlebotomy Site Evaluations
Presenter
Keri Brophy-Martinez
Minutes
Some of the responses from the Phlebotomy evaluation are:
Mentors were knowledgeable and supportive
Mentors answered questions
Site orientations were helpful, if applicable
Students generally graded their knowledge and skills as average pre-rotation.
Students graded their knowledge and skills as excellent post-rotation.
Due to ACC offering CE and Credit Phlebotomy programs, Keri is considering options to bring up our application numbers again. One option is to offer a hybrid phlebotomy program. They would still have the lecture but they would be doing it on their own instead of in the classroom. The students would only come up to campus for their lab time.

ACC Health Science Open House
Presenter
Keri Brophy-Martinez
Minutes
We will be having our Fourth Health Science Open House on February 23 here at Eastview. Started the open house to promote our professions and our departments, to invite clinical people who wanted to know to come in and look at our labs and the equipment that the health science department offer. Another reason is to help keep recruitment coming into all of our programs. Most departments will have a mix of current students and faculty and staff in to assist interested students. All labs will be open so anyone could walk through and ask any questions that they would like answered. Keri has invited the board members and guest to come by and look.

TACLS- Texas Association of Clinical Lab Science- an offshoot of the national organization- If you have any employee that needs CEs or professional development, they might be interested in going to TACLS this year. It is Corpus Christi this year and moves around every year. She provided the link on the agenda. It is a really great way to get continuing education if needed.

If anyone scores under 400 she marks them on the sheet so that she can see where students seem to be having the problems. 629 is ACCs average board exam scores and 501 is the national average score.

Safety
Presenter
Keri Brophy-Martinez
Minutes
One needle stick occurred with butterfly needle during clinical practicum.
We made some changes a couple years ago on how we document butterfly needles used in the clinical site. We try to purchase what our clinical locations use in order to keep student up to date on what they will use in clinical and in the field.

Curriculum Input Needed
Presenter
Keri Brophy-Martinez
Minutes
We continue to do a lot of onsite clinical here on campus. It has been a continued trend not only here in Austin but also nationally that clinical rotations are getting harder and harder to secure. As a result, we have continued to add Sim labs here on campus; we have been doing this for a while for blood bank and microbiology. This clinical class is going to separate into an on campus and on site clinical course. We have started to expand that to other courses as well.
Asked group if there are areas that they feel we need to expand on with our student’s preparedness. The main response is that they would like more time in clinical.
Most are familiar with our competencies; our competencies are our check off list. I go through those checkoffs every year to make sure that everything that is currently on the list should be on the list. One of the things that I am finding to be problematic is the Iris or something similar to the Iris because we have some sites that are still doing everything manual and other sites that are using the Iris. We are trying to figure out how to deal with that. Our students must have a minimum of 20 microscopics but if you are using the Iris than it is doing the microscopic.
Complaints concerning time management for the students. Clinical sites feel students are taking longer than they should for microscopics. Keri and faculty went over how the students learn time management in the clinical.
We are going to have to look at our degree plan again to help get student more prepared for clinical than they have been after the credit hour changes.
We are working on expanding with Baylor Scott and White for clinical sites.
