Challenges, Changes and Updates to the Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography Program
Janet Barlow
Challenges, Changes and updates to the Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography Program: •Number of jobs available for graduates versus program enrollment -Recent graduating class has 4 employed PRN, 2 continuing VT and 3 still looking for employment -Job market in Austin area getting smaller due to poor economy and changes in imaging reimbursement •HIPAA issues -Impact of social media, such as Face book and Twitter, etc. -Students given instruction and information about the importance of HIPAA prior to going into the Clinical setting. -ACC policies often more strict than Clinical Institutions •Vascular Class Retention- floor given to Robin Garza for discussion - The Vascular program is now in its fifth year - Students are selected to enter into the Vascular program during their 3rd semester - Clinical and Didactic curriculum - Students graduate from the DCS/DMS programs in Fall (December) and then continue through the Spring for the Vascular program - 6 DCS students accepted and only 2 currently enrolled -dropouts due to the cancellation of funding and financial reasons - extra semester after graduation (from DCS or DMS program) to complete the Vascular certificate program • Clinical Placements -Gaining sites: *with the restructuring of Cardiovascular Imaging @ St. David’s Imaging centers- affiliation agreements are in place *Dr. Tiblier’s office (Cardiac Clinic of Austin) has agreed to take students- affiliation agreement is in the works *Cardiovascular Associates, Bee Caves- affiliation agreement since 2011 -Some clinical sites are declining to accept a student due to being too busy, not busy enough or training new hires -Students are sometimes not able to scan during the day at current sites due to being too busy or training new hires -Communication with Clinical Instructors about *Students non compliance with Student Handbook/Syllabus rules *Students inappropriate communication with patients/doctors *Attendance/Tardy/Leaving early *Student/ Instructor fraternization
6)
Open Discussion: ESC-VT
• Is completion rate decreasing due to just financial aide • How to implement the Vascular program into to the current DCS program without attending another semester past graduation • How to increase funding • “failing” vs. “struggling” program • How ACC looks at programs with high attrition
7)
Open Discussion: Faculty/Clinical Instructor/Student Interactions
• Enforcing HIPAA • Communication with ACC faculty when a concern arises • Communicate with the students prior to relating the concern to ACC faculty • Asking Clinical Instructors to give a lecture on “Behaviors in the Clinical Setting” in the Fall Semester prior to Clinical rotation • Initiating a Clinical Instructor Workshop (poll the Instructors on what two or three days would work best) • Initiating a Clinical Instructor On-line tutorial • Current Clinical Visits by the Clinical Coordinator (ask Instructors when visiting next what they prefer): *too short *too long *prefer call *prefer visit *prefer scheduled visit
