Presenter
Mr. James Mulhall
Minutes
Mr. James Mulhall committee chair, delivered a 2013-2014 scorecard presentation to the board members, scorecard attached. This presentation brought everyone up to speed on the items that the committee recommended last year. This served as a status update and performance assessment. Dr. Quiñonez stated that soldering skills are currently taught and more will be added into the Fabrication course that Mr. Jesus Casas is putting together. All four proposals that the committee recommended last fiscal year have been pursued and 2 of them completed. Ms. Laura Marmolejo, electronics adjunct instructor will be working improving the Principles of Quality course. Dr. Paul Potier will be working on a general electronics communications course. The elec department did combine the two robotics classes into one course, RBTC-2445. Items that are still open to discussion are:
- To create a review exam prior graduation
- A group project proposal, and classroom visits by industry representatives
- Student portfolio
4)
Description
Discuss the Texas lawmakers legislation bill to lower the number of credit hours to 60 to receive an associate degree.
Presenter
Dr. Alberto Quinonez
Minutes
Discussion the legislation and how it will impact the degree specializations in the department. The current degree plans have the following hours: Automation & Robotics=69 credit hours; Electronics Technician=68; Engineering= 66; Nanoelectronics=71; Power Technology=71; Renewable Energy=72; and Utility Lineworker=63. The new mandate dictates that any Associate’s degree be no more and no less than 60 credit hours; must have 15 hours of academic courses; and must have at least 1 science or math requirement.
The discussion continued as how to add the new courses that were approved by the 2012-2013 committee and at the same time reduce the degree plans to 60 credit hours. The college needs to have these changes in place by Fall 2015.
The committee suggested the following actions:
Make a list of the core skills that what is essential for each student to learn
Analyze the department core vision
See what other colleges have done or are doing
Take the data and streamline the courses
The committee recommended reconvening in three months and making a final review of the proposed changes within 6 months from today.
Another suggestion was made to use the College Credit for Heroes courses as another bench-mark for the revised 60 credit hour degrees.
