a. Professional Accountant Certificate proposed changes – Dr. Reed Peoples. The proposed change is to move a 3 hours business course out of the degree program and into the prerequisite for admittance into the program. Now students must have 6 hours of business course to be admitted to the program. The other changes related to course number changes due to WECM numbering. (ETWR2377 and ACNT 1335 are the new WECM course numbers). Chris moved and Kate seconded. The motion passed to make the above changes.
b. Occupational Skills Award proposed changes – Dr. Reed Peoples. This award is intended for students who are from four-year programs with an accounting degree and are participating in our professional accountant program. It was proposed to add ACNT 2333 Advanced Accounting, ACNT 2347 Accounting Research Analysis or ACNT 1393 Special Topics in Taxation: Tax Research, and ACNT 1347 Federal Income Tax Corporations or ACNT 2336 Financial Statement Analysis. Jim motioned and Kate seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
c. Certified Information Systems Auditor curriculum update – Dr. Reed Peoples gave an update on the CISA curriculum. He is working with Mary Kohls from the IT/CIS department. Reed provided an overview of the skills needed, objectives, and outlines in training program. Module 1 and 2 focus on the accounting skills. Accounting courses proposed included ACCT2301 Principles of Financial Accounting, ACCT2302 Principles of Managerial Accounting, ACNT 1371 Business Applications Accounting, ACNT 2303 Intermediate Accounting 1, ACNT 2331 Internal Control and Auditing. The board proposed removing ACNT 1391 Accounting Theory and replace with ACNT 2332 Accounting Information Systems. Mary Kohls will be taking the proposed curriculum to her advisory board also. Kate brought up the concepts of business continuity, data privacy, and data classification. Data privacy is included on the exam and Kate wondered where this was covered in the curriculum. Reed will take suggestions to Mary and then will bring back curriculum for final approval.

Tracie provided an overview of the proposed data analytics course including sample syllabi and course outline. TSBPA request concerning usage of """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

6. TSBPA request concerning the usage of the terms """"""""""""""""accountant"""""""""""""""" and """"""""""""""""specialist"""""""""""""""" – Dr. Reed Peoples, Prof. Denise White, and Prof. Tracie Miller-Nobles attended a meeting with TSBPA. The board had requested a meeting with the accounting department concerning the usage of the terms “accountant” and “specialist” in our degree/certificate programs and by our current students and graduates. An individual cannot refer to themselves as an accountant if they are not licensed as a CPA by the state of Texas. Additionally, a CPA cannot refer to themselves as a specialist. Per our conversation with TSBPA, we are sharing this information (see handout) with our students, advisory committee, and on our website. Emails will be sent to all current and past students. The topic will be also covered in ACNT 1393 Special Topics in Taxation: Tax Research, ACNT 1335 Accounting Ethics, ACNT 2386 Internship, ACNT 2388 Internship, and ACNT 2375 Advanced Theory and Problems. In addition, we would like to modify the name of our tax specialist degree and certificate. The faculty are proposing that the word “Accounting” be removed from the “Accounting Tax Specialist” degree and the “Accounting Tax Specialist Level 1 certificate”. Jim motioned and Kate seconded to remove the word “Accounting” from the Accounting Tax Specialist degree and the Accounting Tax Specialist Level 1 certificate. The motion was approved with 5 yeas and 1 nay.
