Status report on Veterinary Technology Program approval process

The proposed Vet Tech program was approved by the College’s Curriculum and Programs Committee and scheduled for Board of Trustee (BOT) approval at the May 6, 2013 meeting. The College’s accreditation, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, will receive notice of the program once the BOT approves.

Department Chair/Faculty job descriptions

The job combines administrative and teaching duties. Amendments to the job description as discussed and recommended by the members: • Insert language referencing the knowledgeable requirement of diagnosis of diseases. Eileen and Elizabeth will make the decision on which section of the job description to add the language. • Add clinical or practice setting language following the three year work experience. • Addition of a Licensed Veterinarian in the State of Texas phrase will be added; out of state applicants who are eligible for Texas licensure also will be considered if needed after review of applicants.

Admission, Immunization Requirements, and Technical Standards

Discussion and recommendations for admission to the program: Drug testing and background checks will not be required unless stipulated; students will be informed if a clinical site requires the tests. Drug testing and background checks will be required for faculty and clinical coordinator positions. • Tetanus immunization will be added as a requirement. • Rabies immunization will be highly recommended. A declination form is required for students who refuse. The committee will review a rabies immunization requirement in one year. • A physical exam will not be required. Applicants to the program will be required to sign an Essential Functions and Technical Standards requirement form before admission. Elizabeth will continue to work on this document.

The hands on part of the program will occur outside of ACC facilities. Suggested clinical partnerships: • Central Texas Veterinary Specialty Hospital • Rescue groups and shelters • Wildlife rehabbers A suggestion was made to contact the Capital Area VMA and ask the association to provided names of possible clinical sites.
