Discussion of Study Abroad Models
Presenter
Stephanie Amundson
Minutes
The International Programs Office recently completed a strategic plan for 2010-2012 which highlights the growing demand for study abroad programs by ACC students and faculty. The IP team has discussed a number of new program ideas with faculty, international partnerships with administrators, and student suggested study abroad topics. These discussions in addition to a review of past study abroad programs and a survey of IP office resources has led the IP team to conclude that in order to meet the demand for new and more study abroad programs, a new model for determining the annual roster needs to be put into place that will allow new programs to be developed and reoccurring programs to improve. Competitive Model: A bi-annual model that would provide 14 study abroad slots to open to all departments. Interested faculty members will submit proposals covering two years of programming. Received proposals will be subjected to a non-binding ranking, based on a multi-dimensional model, by the IPAC Committee. The non-binding will be forwarded to the IP office for consideration prior to the final roster recommendation. Final roster will be signed off by VP. The program cycle for this model is 18 month, with programs taking place at the 18 month point. Core & Competitive Model: A bi-annual model that would provide six core and eight competitive slots for a total of 14 study abroad programs. The program cycle for this model is 24 months, with programs taking place at the 12 and 24 month points. Core slots would be designated as follows\'\' 2 slots for Arts & Humanities, 1 slot for Business, 1 slot for Communications, 2 slots for Social & Behavioral Sciences. Departments in consultation with the IP office will assess which study abroad programs in their area will become core for a period of two years. Competitive eight slots will be open to all departments. Interested faculty will submit proposals covering two years of programming. Received proposals will be subjected to a non-binding ranking based on a multi-dimensional model by IPAC committee. Hub Model would be the first step to the larger issue of creating viable international partnerships. The model would require ACC stakeholders to identify 5 priority countries with which ACC would like to have long-term, for profit partnerships. Once identified, study abroad programs would be clustered in these countries and initial agreements for services would be entered into with institutions where we would base multiple programs out of.
