Description
Rapid Morphing of Photographic Marketplace
Presenter
Bill Woodhull
Minutes
The general consensus of the advisory board reaffirmed to the faculty that the zeitgeist was a rapidly morphing marketplace. The influx on new photographers, the commercialization of the market, the expansion of video, and the transition to continuous lighting from momentary, all contributed to make entering the current photographic marketplace a challenging task.
The board agreed that investment in new technologies and skill sets was essential for students seeking to enter into the job market. But they also stated that the the department emphasis of fundamental photographic skills like lighting was valuable and could be used as a factor to distinguish ACC graduates from graduates of other programs. The board stated that other desirable skills included: the ability to estimate, organize, manage and produce a large photographic project, competent direction of photography subjects and efficient delivery of the images.
Some members of the advisory board placed emphasis on marketing skills like social media engagement and leveraging current work to expand into other markets-like including video with still photography. They cautioned over reliance on these tools and insisted that students also needed to develop interpersonal communication skills for real world situations.
