State Law SB 497: The law was passed last year mandating that all Associate Degrees in Texas have to be cut back to 60 credit hours, no more no less.
Austin Competency Analysis Profile (ACAP): A focus group consisting of people employed in all areas of the web/interactive design industry with varying levels of experience. The group gave us input on learning competencies and objectives.
ACTION:
Our current degree plan is 70, so we must create a new degree plan cutting 10 credit hours based on SB 497 and the ACAP information.

IDUX 1271 Survey of Interactive Media: A two credit hour survey course to give students an introduction to the user experience design industry and what all that entails. Course will not require software experience.
Notes: Committee suggested to call the class Survey of User Experience.
IDUX 1471 Prototyping 1: A four credit hour course. The first course to teach software skills in programs such as Keynote, Balsamic, Axure, Omni Tools. This will be the introductory Prototyping class preparing students for Prototyping 2.
Notes: Committee suggested limiting software use and focusing on the foundations of prototyping such as sketching, problem solving, journey mapping, tasks lists, and idea generation.
IDUX 2474 Prototyping 2: A four credit hour course where the students will further develop the skills taught in Prototyping 1, developing and prototyping concepts and presenting those ideas in a professional way. This class will be offered in semester three.
Notes: Committee suggests adding testing and validation.
IDUX 1472 User Interface Design 1: A four credit hour course taking place of the previous Interface Design course, but will instead focus more heavily on UI patterns and will have a heavy mobile emphasis. Right now with 60 credit hour degree there is no room for IOS development and design.
IDUX 2471 User Interface Design 2: A four credit hour course further developing the concepts introduced in Interface Design 1.
Notes: Michelle Trudo suggested avoiding the Adobe Creative Suite and sticking to pen and paper or OmniGraffle.
IDUX 1473 Responsive Design 1 & 2
Responsive Design 1 & 2 would replace Web Design 1 & 2. Students will learn essential HTML & CSS at the beginning and move into frameworking. The courses will also focus on developing for mobile, such as scaling and hiding content.
IDUX 1371 Visual Design: A three credit hour course introducing students to visual design as it relates to interactive technology software. (May hold this class for another degree.)
Notes: Committee discussed the possibility of integrating and shifting some of the focus to more of the parameters of production for mobile operating systems. David Correa pointed out that the class will focus on creating assets for a product and understanding the parameters for creating assets for different devices, not true interface design. Gail Bayeta suggested rethinking the content to style guides, platform research, mood boards, less conceptual and more practical. Theresa Neil suggested adding more validating and testing of prototypes.
IDUX 2473 User Experience 1: UX 1 will be a prep class teaching skills necessary for the project class UX 2.
IDUX 2473 User Experience 2: UX 2 will further develop the skills learned in UX 1 and will have more of an emphasis on collaboration and projects with outside companies. The students will meet and work through the process with real clients. In the future (Highland Mall), we hope to use the class as an incubator and that the industry will bring projects to students.
Notes: Theresa Neil suggested there should be some team building in UX 1.

Questions for discussion:
What degrees do people that are working in this skill typically hold?
Are we aware of any colleges offering a similar degree
Do any of the new courses require skills or education that are different from the other courses.
Notes: Gail Bayeta noted that SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) only allows the hiring of instructors with degrees relevant to content that they are teaching. A survey of instructors is needed to determine if there are instructors available to teach the new prototyping courses, possibly in other departments, based on their qualifications. Jenny Magic suggested it may be easier to decide on instructors after a survey is taken.
