Student Success and Speech Discussion
Presenter
Ron Johns
Minutes
Ron and Mike opened the discussion on adding PSYC 1300/EDUC 1300 to the Component Area Option of the Core Curriculum for 2015-16, and if the committee approved adding the four-hour language courses to the Core Curriculum.
Gaye Lynn Scott moved to add PSYC 1300/EDUC 1300, and ARAB, CHIN, FREN, GERM, JAPN, LATI, RUSS, SPAN 1411 AND 1412 Courses to the 2015-16 core curriculum; second by Shirin Khosropour. Approved.
Committee discussed whether or not ACC should continue including a speech course requirement in all degree plans. With the recent revisions to meet SB497 60-hour mandates, instructional departments were reviewing this issue. The speech requirement is not SACSCOC mandated. Can ACC address speech competencies in other ways? Curriculum Committee will make recommendation to ACAC on certain issues. Members suggested getting instructional departments involved, by identifying how they meet oral competency needs. Departments should have conversations about speech as a required course. How do departments want to incorporate oral competency skills. Some suggested doing a departmental survey to determine how departments teach competencies; how programs are structured to incorporate speech competencies; the departmental decision on speech course inclusion in awards.
Recommendation: Curriculum Committee will gather additional information on Speech and request ACAC not vote on Speech at this time.
Motion by Ron Johns that speech be retained in plans for 2015-16 until information is received from department poll. If allowed to remove speech, what will departments change. Motion was withdrawn.
Motion by Gaye Lynn Scott to remove the institutional mandate that a speech course be included in every degree plan. Second by Carol Hawk. Motion failed (Yes - 6 votes, No - 9 votes).
Mike Midgley will report to ACAC on Feb. 7, 2015 that Curriculum Committee did not choose to remove speech from award plans.
